Spider fleetship is very nice. They've been fantastic, and thanks to my minimal casulties and cloaking, a better choice than Forcefield Bearers.
I never expected to see that sentence.

I'm deciding whether doubling down with high mark riots and spider turrets would just be sensless overkill or great fun.
Riots Are Awesome.  You have to figure out how to use them well (and not just get them splatted or plinking away with nigh-ineffectual guns), but few non-superweapons can have quite their impact on the battlefield.

Can we have all riot guns damage engines to zero again, pleaaase?  I have blissful memories of lines of completely stalled ships.

Also the words 'senseless overkill' should never be spoken.  There is no overkill, only righetously justified just-enough-kill.

Maxim 37: There is no 'overkill.' There is only 'open fire' and 'I need to reload.'

Also relevant, Maxim 35: That which does not kill you has made a tactical error, and 17: The longer everything goes according to plan, the bigger the impending disaster.

They only had that for maybe a month after initial implementation, iirc ;)

My last game, summed up in two sentences.

Spiders fleetships do completely stall things, and this was the first game in months I wasn't refleeting frequently, up till 400 AIP. I usually refleet a lot more often even at 200 AIP, but having a variety of starships available is a huge help with many of the nastier low-cap ships, and now that guard posts don't counter their own counter...

Hit and run is a lot easier when you don't even have to do the run part, and the abundance of eyes and superforts makes adding more ships to the body count less desirable. It's much more efficent to fly/cloak your counter right up next to your target, unload, then hide away before having to deal with the patrol.

I'm not really feeling the Zenith mirrors at all, I'll have to take a closer look at them and figure out why, whether I'm using them correctly.

Even after these last couple of screw ups to reprocessors in a superfort system, my casulties have been surprisingly low. My kill to loss ratio is 255%. Up until these reprocessors hit, I was feeling oddly... competent. I'm not used to that, so I was a little iffy about the whole thing. Now I'm being properly humiliated by simple errors, so all is right with the world, and my inability to either focus on too many things, or the ability to focus on one battle to the exclusion of a thousand attackers elsewhere has returned.

So apparently, everybody believes I should unlock all the spider (ships/turrets) and riot starships. I'm game for that and a few mines while I'm at it. Probably should grab spacetime manips and logistics III while I'm at it.

I currently use Riot Starships rather agressively. The ability to haul Maws away from the battlefield is fantastically useful, and has saved me from quite a few of those refleets.
How do the game stats count devoured/regurgitated units anyways? I presume they only add to the kill/loss ratio numbers if they actually die? Easy enough for me to check, I suppose.

Stardate 2753 on Family Pride (Homeworld after the tragic loss of Earth)
Military Trial of Head Admiral Alexander Winge

Winge:  Your honor, I object to the notion that I have been overly careful and hoarding precious resources in this dark hour!  I have already leveled an entire quadrant and colonized half of that, despite the very clear and present danger of AI reprisal!

Attorney:  Only 15 planets after 11 hours?  We've heard reports that you are simply joyriding through AI worlds with Starships and using only a fraction of the resources available to you!
Judge:  Order, order!  Admiral Winge, you have been accused of squandering resources while progressing at a needlessly slow place.  How do you plead?
Winge (defensively):  Not Guilty, your honor.  I have always strived to follow the best path in this war.  (Humbly) Also, your honor, I do have one request.
Judge:  And what is that?
Winge:  I request permission to hire more Mercenaries.  It seems that I have...erm...almost reached the maximum number we currently allow...

Harvester upgrades might need to be toned back...either that, or I need to stop hoarding and start blobbing  :-[

Wow, I thought my 9 planets after 3 hours was slow. Of course, I'm not maxing out on a mercenary fleet.  :P
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Please never say those first words again! :)

I don't think I ever have max resources for more than a few seconds and it takes me 10 hours or more into a game to get a full fleet of mercs.

Me:  "Waagh where did my resources go?"
Friend: "Well I thought this planet needed more fortresses.."

..Does anyone NOT immediately research the better harvesters?

I always research harvester upgrades, and always spend a lot of time at the resource floor. (but also some time at the cap; I bounce a lot... except in my multiplayer game, because my auto-built engineers spend all my resources as fast as I get them on other people's stuff.)

That's the bad part...I'm not trying to max out a Merc fleet, I'm just trying to keep from wasting resources  :o.  As mentioned, I think I play a bit too conservatively.  I could trim that back pretty quickly with an ASC, but those are far away from my current position (curse you RNG!).

I'm sure I'll be glad for those upgrades when I strike one of the homeworlds...they both have Core Raid Engines, and I will probably get to them after I hit 1,600 AIP (120 homeworld w/o Superterminal, trying to flatten the whole galaxy...yeah, I'll probably regret that decision...).

You can do it!  Really once you hit progress IV the difficulty doesn't really go up that much more.  If you can handle 2k MK IV ships attacking you.. you can handle 3 (trying to divide the numbers we got by 3)  Just remember that Leech I-IV + Merc Parasites hiding behind the front line = your friend.

The special forces blob is probably the most awful part because I'm not convinced it takes multiplayer into account (We've seen a 80k blob in a 1 player + 2 champ map IIRC, and in the ~600 AIP range.  But this was some patches ago)

I only have mk2 metal harvesters unlocked. This game I've only had noticeable economic pressure around the four hundred AIP mark. I've even been spamming logistics everywhere, though I often grab economic command stations mk2 out of pure stubborness and fallen spire campaigning.

Up to 22 planets, just got the first ARS (hacked for Mini-rams... <3).  AI Waves...well, let's just say they don't like a half cap of Fortress I and IIs (2 chokes this game; I hope to eventually bring it down to 1).  Nanoswarms vs Special Forces...well, that isn't even fair...for the Special Forces.  Even with Gravity Drains and Tractor Platforms, my Nanoswarm + ranged combo is utterly devastating.

And, as for resources...well...I guess I'm still not being reckless enough with them  :o.  I keep reaching the cap (with 6 matter converters running...forgot to delete those after that AI strike, lol), and I am almost out of Mercs.  I've even been using them with my fleet blob.  I think I need to go hug a few Ion Cannons or something...

He's probably built all of them already.
