What happens if you don't get the (AIP) memo?
« on: April 13, 2013, 10:25:03 pm »
I'm morbidly curious.

Given:

Diff 7.6
No superweapons.
Generally "normal" settings otherwise.  I.e. nothing that would trigger the Lobby Limburger alarm.

And just playing to take down AI planets (the non-homeworld ones), how many can you take down before it kills you?

I've seen the results of this sort of thing from new players and an occasional joke from an experienced player, but I'm wondering how this is now ;)

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Interesting.

Are we talking a spread out empire to take out hte AI homeworlds or a fortified corner?

I can probably run AIP at least 100, probably 150 higher in a fortified corner then something that would actually let me attack the AI HWs.

Probably need screen shots of attempts people make.

So essentially you want us to take as many planets as we can given those settings? Challenge accepted.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Diazo, I think it's literally "Kill as many AI planets as possible. When you die, tell us how many you got."

Yep :)

Whatever approach you think will give the highest "score", though I'm interested in both approaches tailored to this specific "challenge" and approaches that are more like normal play.

Basically just want to see when AIP gets out of control, and how much a player can get away with by sheer audacity.  In other words, !!science!!.

Heh, challenge accepted then.

Won't get anywhere with it tonight but I've got a pretty free day tomorrow.

Just BTW, I approve of getting some more quantitative data from realistic cases like this before running off and making a change that directly impacts the balance of the whole game at a very deep level. I know we have been bombarding you with qualitative, "I feel X about the current state" type posts, but good for you for recognizing that these aren't really enough to get the whole story, especially when making concrete, quantitative changes.

Challenge accepted, but shifting the focus from waves to reinforcements, the rng has given me a Fortress Baron and turtle. Might I say Missile Guard Posts under FFs in Eye systems are evil, but nothing that can't be solved by Cloaker Starships MK1 and up to Mk3 Plasma Siege and Heavy Bomber Starships with some MRS for longetivity. Now if I happen to have them covered by Fortress as well... I'd have to check out that nothing but raids aar, which i should do anyways.

Should I avoid popping Data Centers, or grab them in the normal pursuit of things? I ask because...

I'm not really used to the mapgen just handing me Data Centers like this, (marked P3). I mean, three of them, this early.

Playing mine on an X map with the railcluster as the bonus.  I can't iterate how much it sucks that I can't roll out a true defensive line.

Edit: After playing for awhile, I can say, you cannot play defensively (like I do normally) with 1 HW.
How the hell you think you guys have to much energy is beyond me.  It took me 5 captured planets just to get my defensive partially up.  Granted I'm only eating waves and various other "normal" stuff.  Had I actually unlocked stuff as I would have normally, I would not have enough offensive power to get through many planets.  ~frustrated at the slog~

You're over defending.  I'm at 92 AIP, 90 minutes in with 4 systems, any my "defense" consists of 20 Missile Turrets, 5-10 Sniper Turrets, 10 Basic Turrets, 10 Flak Turrets, 2 Mini-Forts, 5 Tractor Turrets.  I can drop that on every one of my systems casually.  I'm about to set up my choke point which comes with an Ion I and Ion IV, at which point I'll set up a real defense.  Basically, the AI waves are like getting attacked by kittens.  Awww, how cute, they think their so vicious.  I've had zero energy problems since I took my first system and I'm running at cap for every offensive unit (I haven't unlocked any offensive units though).  Spire Corvette is my bonus ship.  Figured that it was appropriate given I'll be spending a lot of K and I wanted to try it out.

You appear to be describing science.  The main point of this thread is !!science!! :)

But yes, the data may be useful for more than simply fiery death.

If i didn't have a fallen spire campaign and a normal one going, i'd join you :< Ah, who am I kidding, of course I'll try! :D

My strategy is probably going to involve no automatic progress, a LOT of pre-raiding and nuking priority structures, then whatever I can muster to machine gun down all the command centers at once. Hmm.
