@Keith: Just being methodical.  Right now it takes a good while to ninja enough ships from the AI to have a good number to blob with :)  That and merc parasites are killing my econ.  YES... there is ONE ARS on Gorti.  I hope it is a good one too... I'm not really feeling a hack (though I have my cap of MK III turrets available for one).

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

I don't suppose it has occurred to you that the AI is not the intended source of your fleet.

Nope, probably never entered your mind ;)

I don't suppose that it ever occurred to you that I'm fighting with 1/16th of my usual fleet? lol.

866 AIP. I'm already seeing a LOT of MK IV ships in waves and stuff.

Edit: Actually I have far less than 1/16th of my usual forces.  What I really wish I had were the other 3 mod forts with a full set of modules.

Why on earth else would you allow us to have parasites? ;)  Since the new starship improvements leech mk 3 (with a 4 as soon as possible) is almost an imperative to be able to play both offense and defense without too much K cost.  As I was mentioning in my own game, at least 2/3rds of my fleet is AI reclaimed ships and in my 10/10 game we just finished I noticed I had a full cap of every mark of fighter/bomber/missile frigate despite having never researched any of them.

It works especially well with high AIP games like this challenge because the AI gets so many bonus ships!

This is why the AI can't have nice things.

They just get stolen

Well, I'm guessing how the non-lazy-AI stuff will get bypassed by people who still want to finish at under 100 AIP ;)

Just using the tools available to me.  I lucked up with the Nano V fab.  And everyone has mercs.

Aren't mercs random though?  I don't believe I always get merc parasites.  Sometimes the 4th is something else.

I've always had triangle, zenith beams, etherjet, parasites and an enclave.

I must be miss-remembering.  I always delete the merc space dock now, so I haven't looked in awhile.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the ships available are constant. I actually play so slowly on such low difficulties (as in 7 or just below 7) that my money's always far too high. I like to think of the mercs as a "shoot, I'm inefficient with my money, I'll just burn it on mercs"

Merc types don't vary from game to game.

They are ludicrously expensive, but it would appear someone didn't mind waiting 20 hours before really getting down to business.  Plenty of time to rustle up a Jagged Alliance crew to go carjack a fleet or ten.

So far, I've been working relatively slowly on my challenge. I've been catching up on video, but not due to refleeting or boredom. This inattention has led to a few slipups, particularily with my cloakers.

Casulties have been minimal thanks to mini forts, mk2 fleet, mobile repair stations, plasma siege and heavy bomber starships mk3, and most criically, cloaker starships 1/2. Generally, I can take down most guard post without casulties in two 'pulses', I'm really looking forward to finding an advanced starship constructor.

There is an advanced factory within reach but I'm not too excited about it thanks to a pair of defensive AIs with so many Eyes. I've actually been much more interested in the fabricators scattered around, and am currently eyeballing a sniper fab.

7 hours in, 11 planets, 175 AIP.

The Vampire Claw fabricator has been critically useful in defending my choke from the missile frigates that outrange my turrets. Until recently, after a wave of 700 missile frigates hit, I'd completely avoided unlocking any upgraded defenses, and in fact had been using about only half my mk1 turret cap, lightning (full), flak (full), heavy beam cannons (only 2) aside. And won without any of the rest of my fleet on hand.

To make it properly challenging for me, I'm not going to unlock any regular or modular fortresses, just the minis. I decided not to hack the one ARS I found for Forcefield Bearers, instead grabbing the default Spider ship. I'm sure I'll regret it, but I've been on the receiving end of surprisingly few casulties, usually operating with my fleet above eighty if not ninety percent capacity.

Conclusion? None really relevant, but I do find myself liking fabs more than I expected. I've pretty much neutered the entire southern half of the southwest cluster, so i'm about to push for those fabs in my area, then simultaneously expand out of my little corner of the galaxy while consolidating my backyard, which (if I survive) should take me to twenty/thirty planets.  The added fabricator variety and improved positioning is really doing a lot to make them more tempting on 7.6, albeit against defensive AIs.

P.S. This is an iron-man game, no savescumming.

P.P.S. And unlike you guys, I never use leeches and parasites. They mess with my clean tidy symmetrical numbers.

Wait, is the goal here to see how high we can crank up the aip by taking planets, or to play as if we don't care?

Assuming the first, 2x vanilla 7.6's, shield bearers on an X map, nothing else on.

Keith, do you want us to avoid using a ST to crank down the progress in this test?  We've been killing DCs as we see them since that's fairly normal play and just blowing up every planet with enough strategy we think we can live/win, but we've lowered progress by hundreds I think with a ST before to support our high planet games and that may not be what you're looking to get out of this.
