First win!
« on: November 07, 2012, 12:29:45 am »
Well, finally, my first win ever! (tutorial and cheat game not counting)

Playing a vanilla 7/7, Resistance fighter 10/10 (not like they help), Dyson 10/10, Golem+Botnet easy, Spirecraft Easy (yeah, I'm not good)

Spend the first 10 hours or so beating the nebula missions and scout the galaxy...only have 4 planet by then...then I start capturing around (the 5 planet formation at the top came from some random planning...originally only have Barknefen for ARS, but end up capturing Fumirti for cursed golem, Piadmor for Armored Golem and Z Power Gen, and Ranzi for Core Shield D...so decide why not cap Shoed to decrease my ingress point?

Kasekpu has experimental engineer fab (and beam starship fab) which is nice...

Anyway, after that I cap Likboom for Adv. Factory, then start invading Yezoaros to get a staging point...managed to slog through that and Rizar...only 400 ships or so and nothing much in terms of guard post...although surprised as hell when I tried to deploy my wasps from Hive golem...

Yardu is more interesting...Poisark isn't hard at all...but Yardu has a Core Grav and >1000 ships...well that's gonna suck...so...I have no idea why but I drop a nuke on the Yardu (it seems nuke detonate faster than the Warhead Interceptor can blow em up)...enemy ships now down to 4-600 ships...I send my fleet from Poisark in and target exclusively on the Core Grav...I tried it before, blew it up, but lost my fleet (didn't nuke the planet on that try, so reload)...turns out? It seems that my fleet is enough to blow it up and start mopping up the rest of the guard posts too! So send the rest available ships to Yezoraos (with a cursed golem) to prepare to blow em up...blew up command station on Yardu, then proceed to blew it up on the other! Victory!

AIP is 232 before I blew up both home command stations (after cleared out the core guards and drop a nuke)

Now I should try games with minor factions that don't help me alone I guess!

very nice ^^ congratz on your win =)
first 7/7 win always feels so satisfying when you finally get it.
If you like playing with the easy minor factions and don't want to change that, you could also try playing against harder AI types and use a more challenging map. They could make you feel some pain.
anyway, well done =)

Thanks everyone!

Gotta say 2 things I found playing this game:
  • Wave size scales pretty darn fast with AIP...has lots of fronts, so defense starts to leak enemy ships through...was gonna capture 3 more planets (one with ARS with Armor Ship as 1st choice, 2 with Spire Archive) but I don't think I can bear the burnt of the wave attack that good...(also the reason why I only clear the guard post in AI homeworld first and the blow up both home command at the same time)
  • You think Hive Golem and wasp are powerful? Face decently sized cluster of Spire Railgun Cluster and think again! Those things mow down wasps like nobody's business

Just wondering...does blowing up an AI home command give any advantage (other than being 50% done with command killing)?

That is AIP doing its job, making you think twice before taking more stuff. ;)
That said, I wouldn't mind the "slope" of the wave over AIP relationship be toned down a little bit, with increase in base size (wave size in AIP 10) in return.

Not inherently. Just like in a co-op game, if one player loses a homeworld, you eat some AIP, but the player that lost their home can keep playing just fine due to the HW core being spawned.

Aye, on AIP up over 400 you are definitely going to feel to pain. At 600+ even more so. I think the goal is to finish the game around 400 tops (that is, after killing the first homeworld), but that varies with skill and patience ofc. On 10/10 games, you'll rarely see AIP over 50 because anything more and the AI swats you like a fly on the windshield :P

That being said, do try to minimize your fronts. If you are taking massive damage from waves, try to gate raid the outlier planets and leave only ONE gate still adjacent to your planets. That way you guarantee the waves will hit ONLY that planet, so you can focus your wave defenses there.

yeah I remember my first 7/7 victory. For some reason it was actually against hard AI types. I remember one of them being a techno raider (probably I just started with Random All and got the harder ones). It was only 40 planets, I abused the botnet and dyson sphere and yet it still took me more than 15 hours to win. I remember shouting "yes, I did it!!" out loud when I finally managed to take down those homeworlds, which I remember putting up quite a fight.
After that win I still had to learn pretty much everything about most minor factions though. Only had a few easy ones enabled.
Yeah there is nothing like a first real win. Or any high difficulty win. No matter how many times you beat a 9/9 game, it always feels satisfying.
