Suggestion: New Category
« on: July 03, 2009, 04:45:43 am »
Hello,

I suggest that you create a new forum category called "Feature Requests" so that there's one common place where people can list off what they'd like to see added to the game, etc.  This way, it's easier for the developers to come up with the requirements for the Q4 2009 expansion and whatever follows thereafter.

I know I have a short list of suggestions already, and it will only grow as time goes on.

Hmm, this is an interesting suggestion -- what do all the regulars here think?  Right now it seems that about 75% of all the posts in this forum are about feature requests or bug reports, so that would kind of empty out this forum (and separate the discussion of requested features from the prereleases to which they are commonly related), but on the other hand it would make it easier for people to see just strategy discussion here.

Of course, whether people would really honor the separation once it existed is another good question...  I'm interested in hearing what people think about this, I think the idea is intriguing but I also have my reservations.  I'm happy to go with whatever the majority wants.

As for the list of suggestions you have already, lay them on me!  I'm the sole developer, and I keep a list offline of stuff that is "to-do," stuff that is "maybe," and stuff that is for future expansions (either the first or the second).  I pretty much already have enough ideas to fill out about 1.5 expansions, but I'm not yet certain which features will go into which expansions, particularly since ideas are still coming in.  In the end, I expect to do at least two expansions, but I'll do more if there's just too much content (and, to a degree, the first two expansions might just get even bigger based on player ideas).

Then, of course, there is also a lot of stuff that I'm already adding in the meantime, as part of the ongoing free DLC.  When suggestions come in, I put them into one of my three categories based on a variety of factors, but mostly stuff that goes for the expansions is stuff that is either nice to have but not super needed right up front, is a large amount of work to code and test (too much for a week-long cycle), or falls under a few expansion-only categories of new features (new bonus ship classes for the docks, new AI styles, etc, are to be expansion-only).

Hope that helps, and for everyone else who sees this, please weigh in with your feelings about having a separate forum.  Thanks!

Given that a number of innovative concepts have been born out of general discussion of the game mechanics (Wormhole Command Posts are a good example of this), it would be difficult to achieve any really meaningful distinction between the two forums, regardless of whether people intend to honor it.

The system we currently have in which you note down key ideas from discussions for possible additions to the game has so far proven tremendously effective.

If players want to emphasize that their thread is specifically a feature request, maybe they could simply use, 'Feature Request: <Topic Title>', for the thread name.

on the other hand it would make it easier for people to see just strategy discussion here.

From the opposite perspective, the strategy discussion is probably the easiest thing to separate out. Perhaps a separate AI War Strategy forum section would be appropriate. Players could start an article, tweak it based on feedback, and then have it stickied once it has reached a certain level of maturity and usefulness. Although a collaborative Wiki may be a better platform for this. Maybe I should start a fan site :P.

Yeah, I had some of the same thoughts.

Yeah, I think this could work really well, actually.  I think you're right, having that separate would probably be a cool thing.

Haha, yeah, I think a wiki might be easier to maintain in a lot of ways.  The main ArcenWiki isn't collaborative simply because I'm using it as a manual, basically.  I wish there was a way to basically make a certain sub-section collaborative or something.  I don't know if MediaWiki wikis can be used in that way or not.

Of course, I guess I could just start up a second wiki that is the "Community ArcenWiki" or something like that.  That would save you the trouble of starting a fansite, unless you want to -- I'm torn on that, because of course I love the idea of fansites sprouting up, but on the other hand it is nice to have as much info aggregated for players in one place as possible.  Either way, if fansites start cropping up I'll be sure to link to them in such a manner that players can easily figure out what they contain and where the needed information might lie.

I tend to prefer not creating new topics for every little feature request. I like the long topic "Suggestions" for many of my ideas, and I also put them in the "pre-release patch announcement" threads when I happen to think of them there.

The forums have a (fortunately) low enough volume of (high quality) posts that I would prefer not to have more categories, unless the forum software simply had an "aggregation" function where it would show all new messages across all (or specified) forums.

If it were created, I would use it sometimes. :)

I've set up a new community wiki that anyone can edit.  Have fun!  http://arcengames.com/communitywiki/index.php?title=AI_War:Fleet_Command
