Time Limit?

Is there a point where the game gives you a loss if you haven't gotten everyone into a federation?

I don't think so.

I'm not a great fan of time limits so I hope they don't go down that route. I prefer the more relaxed approach the game currently has.

There's a soft time limit in that if you don't eventually succeed then most likely one of the races will start taking out the others and eventually take over the system themselves. But there's no hard limit where you will instantly lose at year X.

New playstyle goal:

How many years can you play without winning or losing the game?

I prefer not having a time limit too.  I was just wondering how much of a risk it is to start long-term research projects in terms of wasting valuable time.

lol...

I can see it now: "The Last Federation Expansion 1: Spaceward Collapse"
New game mode where even more bad events happen and you need to work to keep all 8 races in the game without them killing each other. Points awarded for ship and population deaths.  :P

That would make a pretty cool game mode.

Oh man, that sounds great.

Maybe that should be the expansion theme, an added "Vengeance" start mode with an alternate Last Hydral who, instead of trying to create the Federation, tries to cause as much death and pain as possible.  :P

I've actually never got to that point, even in observer mode (due to the insane 'going to plaid' issue with the galaxy simulation of having a few thousand armadas shooting at each other), but what exactly happens if a single race just takes over the whole galaxy? Do you essentially 'win' or something like that?

You could argue that you won in a philosophical sense, since your goal of 'unite all the planets in one federation' is achieved. However, if a race that's not in the federation manages to capture 4 planets on their own, they form a fear empire, at which point they become ineligible for ever becoming part of the federation (which might be worth reconsidering, say if you knock them back down to one or two planets, but that's a different argument) and will continue attacking other planets until they get all of them, or you wipe them out completely. If they do get all the planets, you get a 'lose' screen.
