Feedback: Burlust Warlord Duel
« on: April 18, 2014, 11:01:18 pm »
So for my first game, I chose a random advanced start and ended up crashing on the Peltian's planet.  Shortly after escaping, my next action was to take the quest to grant spacefaring to the Burlusts; they have really high compatibility with their planet, and seem like they'd be good allies.

After that, I was looking at ways to make friends with them.  Turns out, the best way is to roll into town, murder the prime warlord, and makes friends with the NEW warlord.  So, fully expecting to die, I challenged the prime warlord as my second ever combat.

Short story: Warlord battles are too easy, and also too grindy.

Longer version: Normal combat difficulty.  For starters I thought I'd take him head on.  Full power to shields, let's trade blows... oh, after one turn my shields are gone.  Nope nope nope nope...  How about full power to engines and I'll circle strafe him.  His only weapons are slow bullets and slow missiles... oh look, that works.

So for 5 million points of damage at a rate of about 70k damage/turn, I circle strafed the warlord to death.  At no point did he remotely challenge me, except one moment when I learned the hard way about his gravity lance.

My suggestion: Warlords, with their somewhat unique roll of solo boss battles, should probably have some very unique and challenging weapons.  More than any other encounter, these guys should be throwing bullet hell patterns of death at you.  Certainly, considering the seemingly huge reward for beating one (the Burlusts now seem to be my BFFs4life), it should much more challenging to do at the very start of the game.

I'd be greatly in favor of ratcheting up the intensity of these fights in general - give them less insane amounts of health, but make it hard to survive long enough to take out what health they do have.  I feel like they'd be more compelling as a "glass cannon" kind of boss; they certainly aren't very interesting as an "armored hulk that can't actually hit you" boss.

Excessive enemy durability seems to me to be a primary factor in keeping the TLF combat in general from being very interesting. The Warlords and Assassins obviously represent extreme versions of that problem.
The beatings shall continue
until morale improves!

I dueled a warlord and was having a blast with it, trying to dodge his bullets, trading off mobility to get away with weapon damage to actually kill him...

Until I realized that I could just move in one direction and outrange him by aiming straight backwards with the "aim at exact point" option.

Possible Solution: Make a "dueling arena" from which you cannot escape.  Fits the feel of a duel and forces you to actually stay somewhat close to the warlord.

I absolutely agree, and actually I signed up primarily to mention this. I have brought the warlord fight down to a very simple formula.

-Bring any reasonably long ranged weapon - Energy Blaster, Spreadshot, Mass Driver, etc.
-At start of fight, put maximum points into weapon, minimum into shields, and you have 3 left in mobility.
-Turn yourself so you face away from the warlord's ship
-Wait for him to enter the maximum range for your weapon
-Start moving away from him in a straight line, at the top speed you can achieve with the 3 mobility
-Shoot until he dies

Now, admittedly, different ships have different speeds, so you might have to tweak your mobility a bit, but the point is the same. The warlord's rapid fire projectile weapon is only slightly faster than the warlord's maximim speed, and they fade out way before they reach you, and you're comfortably out of range of his other weapons. It honestly makes me feel bad that the fight against what's supposed to be a super badass is so trivial, but there you go.

Now, if you ask me how I'd fix it, I'd say you're asking the wrong person, but I would also tell you that you could possibly make it so that the warlord ships have an increasing speed as they keep moving relatively straight - Have their top speed be higher than their acceleration if you know what I mean.
I also like that Arena idea by Konqq up there.

The straight-line tactic is even more cheesy than circle-strafing, yes.

However, fixing the straight-line tactic (like with an arena) doesn't fix the fact that it's still really, really easy to beat the warlord by circle-strafing.
