Probably so that people don't just post links to facebook and say "hey, vote for this!"

The point of reddit's voting and sorting is to bring popular stuff to the top of its various lists. If you follow an external link to a post, you are circumventing their voting. In otherwords, you didn't find it from reddit, therefore your vote isn't important to their number crunching.

Additionally helps against vote bombing (a lot of people coming in to upvote one specific post for whatever reason).

Reddit actually has a countermeasure if you follow the direct link and upvote. The best way to make sure your vote counts is to go directly to http://reddit.com/r/games and click on the new tab. Locate the article and upvote it there.

Does anyone know why this is the case? Seems strange.
