Influencing others VS Doing job by yourself
« on: October 13, 2014, 07:26:11 am »
Hi!

I wanted to experience unique playstyle that's found only within this game - play a "diplomat". Influence other races to do the work you want to be done. And I'm really enjoying this aspect. Helping pick the right (or wrong) RCI trends, asking to help someone's war effort (do I want enemies dead, or I hope, that race you just waged war upon will be able to deal with both of you?) or brokering truce. Helping in research or contruction. Making partners in commerce. Etc.
However I found that manipulating RCI via dispatch missions is super effective and races can't deal with it on their own. They can't even deal with natural changes to their RCI! Generally dispatch missions feel too powerful when compared to long term options like RCI buildings (and attitude buildings vs improve relations dispatch) - it takes like 50 years for a building to do what you can do in 1 month.
Also, player's ship is capable of singlehandedly destroying an entire fleet. I'm in a super powerful prototype ship, so it's reasonable that my ship is worth more than 1 or 2 flagships, but currently player battles have too much impact. To defeat entire fleet, entire fleet of ships should be required.
I want to feel the need of other races and their powers. Currently I feel like me >>>>>>> millions and billions of any people.

What do you guys (and girls!) think? Would you prefer to give players more "do it yourself" options or more "make someone else do it" options?
(I'm so hyped at influencing others that I do it unconciously. Here I asked you to pick from two options, but made my entire post advertise one of them. :P)

Cheers,
Valguris

You do appear to be correct about the RCI buildings simply not living up to the dispatch missions. I was trying to prop up one race by helping them build a bunch of buildings, until I just said "fark it, I'll do it myself". It's super easy with dispatch missions to drive them up (or down).

During my last game, which I completed, I never really felt that the universe was in much danger while I was away on long dispatches. Usually I'd set things up so if anything did happen, it would trend toward my favor anyway. So in this way, the "cost" of dispatch missions (time) isn't really anything to be that concerned about.

I don't really agree with you on the attitude building vs relations dispatch. The relations dispatch is capped isn't it? And horribly expensive. The attitude buildings are a great passive force in getting the relations set the way you want, and they work alongside you when you are dispatching elsewhere.

As to your question, I'm not really sure. I guess I'm kinda indifferent. Either way I'm making use of a game mechanic, I'm more concerned with the balance of pro/con/risk/reward than what flavor it comes in. Take a look at pirate bases. You can either destroy it yourself, which is easy to control (win), and gives you nice rewards. Or, you can ask a race to do it, which costs you something and... can they fail? I dunno, I can't figure out why I'd ever want to do it...
