I am actually banned to this day from the GameSpot forums for self promotion, way back in 2009.  Funny, I've been on their official podcast and such since then (the one about the XBox One announcement -- been a while), but their forums are no-go for me.  There were people asking about co-op strategy games, and I responded with a long list of ones that I enjoyed, and also said "also I've made one, here it is if you want to check it out.  I made two such responses, tailored to specific threads that were pre-existing, and got an immediate perma-ban because of "repeat violations" despite never getting a warning.  Thanks GameSpot! ;)

Anyway, so yeah, after that (summer 2009) I made it a practice to never be the first one to post in a forum about Arcen's stuff.  Instead I typically went in to answer questions, and that's it.  I was all over bay 12 and gamers with jobs and so forth back in the AI War and Valley 1 days in particular.  But then ran into having less time.

As far as LPs go, would it be helpful if I posted some of those myself?  When AI War was new, I did some videos along those lines for that game, and that did seem to help.  I actually did the original-original tutorials for those, way back before Mánagarmr did, but then he did new ones that are VASTLY better and more up to date than mine.  Mine are like 6 years out of date, and his are only maybe 2 years out of date at this point, haha.
Have ideas or bug reports for one of our games?  Mantis for Suggestions and Bug Reports. Thanks for helping to make our games better!

Yes, absolutely! The more of your own content you have up, the better. For one, it helps people find you naturally. For another, it provides material for bloggers and content creators, since they always need content for their sites, and it gives you raw stuff to post on Arcen's blog.

Atlus USA does a really good job of promoting themselves. In two months leading up to the launch of one of their games, they start their Youtube promotion. They'll make videos for early story details, characters and features, maybe three minutes long at the most, in addition to regular trailers.

Seeing as you're working with a game that's still very much "alive", you'll want to talk about things that will not change during development. The peltians, for example; a one to two minute video showing leader art, showing them getting rolled over in game by ground forces, and then turning around and bombing the entire world with text narration, would go a long way in explaining what they are like in-game. Throw in the TLF computer's voice clips about them for extra niceness. The other races can be done in much the same way, replacing the peltian's racial characteristic with whatever is appropriate for the race at hand.

At the same time, you can make videos about the land/sea/sky balancing act, Planet, market items and how ridiculous they get, and the Cobalt Bomb ending. And you can also just play the game, but when you do that you'll want big huge disclaimers that the game is a living product that will change even after release, so the game you play in the videos might not work like the game they buy.

Yes, it would. So many people now just use LP to make their opinion on a game. Actually a short "LP" I did (low quality) already started to get too much attention for my taste as it was really too bad, so I put it offline.

Absolutely, if you can spare time for this. I think it would be helpful to show your product to everyone waiting. Maybe once some features complete and you don't plan to change, sometimes changes may be not taken kind though. But showing some core features, maybe some gameplay(begining without unlocking most features, so people actually would like to get game). Maybe in starting phases of development it is uncalled, but in late stages when features unlikely to change(with respect to desire keep freedom to change product as you feel right).
Firaxis actually good at promoting their games, not always fair, showing one saying there is more but in fact the things were in demo are all things, but they present their products quite well. Same goes with stardock ("Sorcerer king")
People tend forget you doing something if they see nothing for long, in same way they burn out from trying or playing too much.

Makes sense!  I'll definitely start doing some videos once things start settling down with feature changes, then.  Most likely in early September, so that there is a good lead-up for things prior to release in late September, but at the same time things are just in polish mode by then.
