Sites/channels you'd expect to discover SBR on
« on: August 03, 2015, 08:41:02 pm »
Hypothetically speaking, of course. I'm looking for any less than obvious sites, video channels, distribution channels, etc. where one might find coverage or mention of Stars Beyond Reach -- in effort to target individuals and groups that are more likely to have a real interest in the game.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, thanks!

Rock Paper Shotgun's run a few articles about SBR already, and I remember TotalBiscuit really liked TLF. PCGamer is kind of a gimme. Kotaku and Destructoid too, but I don't care for their layouts.

Tom Francis really liked GalCiv and he's a developer now, so he could be worth outreach. GOG could probably be convinced to do a pre-release showcase, now that I think about it. SomethingAwful could work, if you were upfront about being a dev showing off the game and had someone willing to answer questions. Oh, why not get Chris to do a reddit AMA?

Off the top of my head.

for some reason I don't really look at gaming websites for me its really just YouTube although out of the whole roster of channels I watch/listen to total biscuit is the only one I'm persificly expecting to cover it although he never mentioned that games tlf in arcens roster from what I've never ever stay the same(in a good way) weather that's a good thing or not is hard to say seeing as how I at the time wouldn't have sunk my teeth into it after I watched it.

actually I forgot nerd cubed would probably be enthralled although to be honest(at least basing of library of videos) he doesn't to be aware arcen exists.

Thought of another vector: TvTropes. Can't speak for anyone else, but I saw a listing for The Last Federation there and the descriptions of the aliens were lurid enough that I bought the game a while later. You need a page and a bunch of listings on related trope pages for that.

Same here as Youtube goes.  Seeing the game really being played & explained, in motion, rather than just written about, helps a TON. Aside from Steam itself, this is where I find out about new games.  Though not always from the hyper-popular guys, often I see them from smaller ones.

The problem:  finding vids of Arcen games can be.... difficult.  I mean, hell, AI War has been out for about a million years now, constantly does well, yeah?  But there's like NO VIDS OF IT.  I tried to find a few good LPs to watch of it. Nnnnnnnope.

Or even something like Bionic Dues... I saw Das24680 do it, but he only did it on the too-easy difficulty (aka, just one-shot kill everything), and he didn't actually complete the series, only went a little bit in.

And aside from that, I've seen nothing, really.  I've sure tried to find them, but nope.

TotalBiscuit has in the past given credit to Arcen for innovative and complex games, and since Stars Beyond Reach is a city-builder/4x fusion kind of deal, there's a good chance that he'll be interested in playing it, thus it's not unlikely that he'll cover it. So I second the notion that you guys should send him a review copy.

Misery, Malkasphia has played some of bionic dues.
Pretty sure the problem with AI War videos (again, Mal did a couple...entertainly-fated ones) though, is that they'd require a lot of editing to be interesting, unless someone played it like a paradox grand strategy. (for some reason theres a whole lot more videos of those than AI War, even though you're about as likely to be waiting around in them for truces and/or sieges)

The Bay 12 forums are how I first heard about AI War, and it might even have been a post from one of the creators (we did end up having one of them visit the thread if nothing else).  Like most boards it's fairly hostile to advertising, but last time I was there at least, it probably would be receptive to "Hey you have threads about our existing games, would you like this one too?"

...Though I'd be a little surprised if there wasn't one already.

I made the offical tutorial videos for AI: War but that's all I've ever made for it, and those are horridly out of date by now. Both in content and quality. I've just not had the time to sit down and make new ones or even an LP of AI: War. It's SUCH a time consuming game with long stretches of lull where it's truly not that entertaining to watch. Making a LP or similar about AI: war is a very daunting task.

That said, I think Scott Manley wouldn't mind having a look at SBR.

So, Paradox is just about to announce a new sci-fi grand strategy game for February 2016, meaning their site is about to become a hotbed of SF-related activity. They probably wouldn't be opposed to taking recommendations for similar games in the meantime.

Thanks everyone, I'll look into these. We have at least half of the press/video producers mentioned either confirmed for a build ahead of launch, or at least on our list to contact about it. We've been able to find a solid amount of videocasters for our past few launches, I'm confident we'll be able to get a good chunk involved again with SBR.

For sites like TVTropes and forums like Bay 12, self-promotion is generally (and understandably) frowned upon. I'll look into it based on suggestions, but as always, we appreciate anyone willing to wingman ( http://99u.com/articles/51242/the-braggarts-dilemma-how-to-promote-yourself-without-being-a-jerk ) for us at spots such as these -- something we hate to bug about, but it can make such a big difference for a game at launch (especially a Steam release in 2015).
