Destroy, eliminate, annihilate, that's fine. Even evict. The term "genocide" is hard to get in a gaming mood over when it involves racial overtones. For example, we have modern day refugees in my hometown that are genuine victims of genocide- the elimination of their ethnicity- that are still recovering from the savagery against their women, children, confiscation of their property, and so on. Genocide means so much more than just killing people; it's to completely annihilate a race, to stop breeding, torture, and the loss of human rights.

I don't think that's what we're doing here over a game like this. I sure wouldn't play it if it was doing any of these things.
.
edit: And I like obliterate.

Yeah, that's... pretty horrible.  I really appreciate your taking the time to explain (and others kind of did it for you anyhow), because I really did not get your meaning at first.  But when you put it like that, yeah the word certainly cannot stay.  These are funny little colorful dudes.

Well...genocide is a harsh word...which is why, even as a creator, you are NOT allowed to do it.

You are annihilating a civilization if you lose. You are not just losing your military units. You are losing a civilization. I don't see how it is not OK to call it what it is.

I take it to the opposite extreme.

You are, ultimately, fighting to prevent genocide, not encourage it.

Which is why I think it should stay.

Life is short. Have fun.

chemical_art: That is exactly how I felt.  However, I felt like the counterarguments were strong enough to overcome those feelings by far, for me at least.  Read Cyborg's post, if you missed it.

I did.

And that is exactly what you do if you knock out a civilization.

Which is why I think it should stay.

If the game, in any way, encouraged you to do it, then I would see why you would avoid it.

Which is why in FPS it is never mentioned you murder people.

But you are not doing genocide, you are preventing it.

Using the word makes it a much more intensely, personal, and ultimately more meaningful affair.
Life is short. Have fun.

Obliterate is far, far, far more fitting to the tone of this game than genocide. I think it's a vast improvement and not even a compromise.

If I was going for serious drama, I would stick to the guns on genocide.  In the tone of Shattered Haven, that would be completely appropriate.  Even in AI War it's a little borderline appropriate, though that kind of sits in the middle of where it would and would not be.  But this game is just so funny and much more relaxed and lighthearted.  It's not Tidalis, but it's also not Gears of War, you know?

While I agree with you chemical_art (that the word is used properly), being sensitive is something with merit.  I can even find proper usage of the other word that I won't mention again, here in this game, and keep it in context.  There would be mass outrage if it was actually included.  Cyborg provides an excellent argument for why it needed to change.
Debate should be whether or not the game is fun (when released) not about the language contained within.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

*shrug*

In none of your other games, aside from maybe AI War, does a whole existing civilization's life or death rest in your hands. Genocide only exists when talking in such a scale.

I guess the tone makes more sense though.

I will say this though, and completely seriously:

If you are tired of not getting coverage, you take a risk.

We could take it to off-topic, chemical. And I disagree about not trying to cause... annihilation. In my play testing, I'm actually trying to ride the edge of not losing but beating the pus out of the other side to get a high score.

Not interested in taking this off topic. We are already almost going in circles. I've played that game too often recently, not playing again for a while.

Interestingly, this topic is another reason why the Ender's game trailer totally misses the point.
