SoTS 2 "All Clear" Issued
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:57:06 am »
Look like the developers finally consider SoTS 2 a "release state" game: http://www.kerberos-productions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=35604

Has anyone played it recently who can share impressions?  There have been weekly patches for a year now, so I wonder how it's shaped up.

Oh nice, and just 10 months after release!

Hey now, at least they didn't just drop it ;)  Not saying that gets a free pass, of course.

I'm also very interested to know if things are really in a decent state now.  I bought the game knowing it was broke to support its completion, and aside from a little dabbling have waited until it's out of "beta" to play it.

Fortunately, you're the best one to find out.  Go forth and place judgement knight of the testing realm!

Let us know if its a 4X or 5X game, if you catch my drift (pun intended).

When it's is completely bug free and works as it should I'll probably buy it. I'd also like to see Angry Joe's review about it first.

I'm actually on working on Valley2 right now, and far more interested in furthering my AIW game in what off-hours I get for the next few days ;)

I find AJ amusing. A lot of amusing, actually, but I never take his reviews seriously. He's far too biased and emotional about his reviews. It's basically "SHIT!" or "GODDAMN AWESOME WITH A BADASS AWARD!", very rarely anything inbetween.

I love him as entertainment, but when I want a proper review, I'd rather use TotalBiscuit, as he's more leveled in his criticism.

EDIT: Yes, I'm aware that TB doesn't do reviews, only first impressions. But that, to me, is even more relevant for me as a customer.

I tend to agree in part, but never completely. I also tend to disagree with him rather much on big AAA releases (Skyrim and Sleeping Dogs being notable). He tends to love these big budget games, but I generally can't stomach them.

Three games he loves and game badass-awards that I can't stand:

 - Skyrim
 - Sleeping Dogs
 - Borderlands 2

I've gotten to the point where I don't look at reviews unless it's a really close call on the purchase, and then there are a few specific reviewers I look to.

Mainly it's because of games in the past that I've really enjoyed thoroughly, only to discover later that it got mediocre (or downright horrible, in the case of my favorite game) reviews.  And with some other games I saw the negative reviews first and went on to really enjoy the game, albeit somewhat diminished by the "yea, I guess it could do X better..." feeling.

Sure, there is a danger there. But there a few games I wish I'd watched/read reviews of before purchasing. Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is one of them. HORRIBLY bugridden, terrible interface and broken AI/pathfinding makes that game unplayable atm, so I'm waiting for a patch. And I bought that at full AAA price >_>

Rose-tinted nostalgia glasses are cruel :S

I usually don't either. But the prospect of playing a modern Carrier Command was too awesome. Also, I kept thinking "In what possible way could screw up that game? I mean, really?"

Yeah...

Nowadays I'm very careful when buying new games. I also never let a reviewer decide for me. Also there are some really terrible reviewers.. ZeitgeistReviews is a perfect example. That guy likes Risen and thinks Mass Effect 3 ending was ok. He also didn't understand why he died in his Dragon Rising review when he was standing in front of the enemies. Take cover you idiot.. I can't stand that guy.

Anyway.. watch reviewers you seem to often agree with but never let the reviewer make the decision for you. Use your brain and try before you buy (demo). Oh and watch gameplay videos. I consider Halibuts WTF videos as gameplay videos rather than reviews.
