What? There's actually someone DEFENDING this hilarious piece of horrid design? What? How...what? That blows my mind. It's such a disastrous disregard for customer freedom it's hilarious. That I have to be constantly connected to a server that could potentially go down at any time and take my savegames with it...to play a single player game...boggles my mind. It's such a stupid design desicion that I cannot fathom that there is ANY regard for the customer in that design. It's purely to create an "online service" that can be milked with DLC further down the line. Also DRM.

*steps down from soap box*
Go to the simcity forums on gamefaqs. There's nothing but two warring factions. The first is the people who can get into the game or love EA to death or are paid to love EA who write about how amazing the game is. The second group are the people who have actually tried to play the game and can't and want their money back and generally sort of go overboard about hating EA. There is also one person with a sensible opinion of "Man I wish this wasn't happening so that people could play an otherwise good game" who is me.

Also, totally wasn't defending THQ, but I got the THQ complete pack and I actually have loved most of the games. There are problems, but nothing nearly as offensive as triple-A nonsense I see sometimes. Also, those other really good publishers aren't more or less dead and gone. THQ is.

And Zespri, it is in the consumer's hands as to whether this is the future of gaming. If people get the common sense to not reward terrible business practice and heartless DRM policy, then game developers, publishers, stockholders, and so forth will lose more money to that than to piracy. In an ideal world, it'll all stop. Personally, I really am hoping that all of the non-MMOs with always online policies fail. It's not because the game is bad, or I hate the developers, or anything. I want the people who authorized/forced this nonsense to be punished for it. Hard. I want this gone from the industry immediately. I do not want to be forced to play multiplayer, I do not want social capabilities in my games, I do not want strangers to be able to jump in and help at random, and I do not want to play always online games on my reliably slow internet connection, and I will boycott, write letters, sign petitions, protest, I will do anything possible to make this not become the norm. Anybody else who has a problem should do that as well, and maybe we'll eventually make an impact that counts.
And yeah, I know that petitions and letters are always ignored, but I don't care. This is ridiculous and I'll get every kind of mad that I want to get. As a consumer, you do have one entitlement: To a product that works when you get it, after you paid for it.

(I probably wouldn't in all honesty actually protest in real life. I have more important passions to pursue. But, all of that post is symbolic of how much this whole 'movement' is something I really do hate to the fullest.)

Anyone who buys from EA deserves what they get, in my opinion. It's not like it's a big secret how they operate.

Yea, there's something to "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me".

EA's fooled a lot more than once.  At this point "insultingly bad customer service" could basically be a bullet point on the feature list for everything they publish.  Said attribute may or may not bite you on a particular game at a particular time, but it's always there.

It's kind of a shame, since it sounds like Maxis actually made a pretty good game, but the suits at EA forced them to shoehorn in a multiplayer mode that nobody wanted as a lame excuse to require being connected to their servers.  I used to like EA, but they seem to get worse and worse every year as they find they can get away with more.  Maybe this will be a wake up call for them.

I used to think this, but it's starting to sound like the people who are actually able to play the game for a period of time are finding it to be pretty lacking in the end. Smaller regions, no terraforming, bad pathfinding.

While I don't generally think "don't buy it" will really stop EA and the like from going this kind of route, I think "don't buy it" is a good personal move for each of us so that we can "wean" ourselves from whatever's actually attracting us to the products of companies like that in the first place.

The main reason isn't so much what they're doing now (though always-online-drm is pretty bad), but what they're moving towards.  They're already well on the road to having microtransactions so deeply embedded that you need to pay real $ just to get through a single-player-game you already paid for ("this boss takes 5 rockets to kill, and I only picked up 4, but EA is so helpful and will gladly sell me an extra rocket for $1").  You know they'd just love to do that, it's only a matter of time before they try.

I'm actually not horribly against microtransactions in a single player game as long as it doesn't define how the game and levels are designed. If there are only four rockets, or if the fifth rocket can only be found in a Painkiller-like way then it's gone too far. However, if it's a case of, "I screwed up, and I need to either be better or spend real money" then I don't really care. As long as I can follow the "I screwed up" logic and restart the amount that I have to in order to continue enjoying the game to just do better and get beyond the part where I need the rockets.
The thing is, in that case, it's avoidable. In the case of Diablo 3 and SimCity 5's DRM, it is completely unavoidable without emulating the server illegally. In the case of Diablo 3's microtransactions, it is largely impossible to get personal item upgrades or any reasonable amount of gold without spending real money to buy it from others... although that isn't really the fault of the RMAH itself, rather the fact that they had to reduce the likelihood of any kind of decent item so the auction houses wouldn't ruin the game. Have to say, they kinda did anyway.

Problem is, when companies put Microtransactions into a game, it seems to always affect the game. It affects the balance of the game in order to encourage it. Because we had a mobile game come out recently that (I can't remember the name of) went out of its way to not encourage microtransactions. The developers of that game made little to no money off the game. So there is absolutely no reason for game developers to put in microtransactions that won't affect the game in some way. Because if it doesn't, they won't make money off of it. Its why I'm so strongly opposed to them because it is so easy to go down the dark path and really abuse the hell out of it. EA just showed that with Real Racing 3 on mobile. It is the most abusive scheme I've ever seen and I saw Tetris on iOS put in a subscription service with microtransactions.

There is an online Tetris game somewhere that was way overbalanced to favor those who "payed up". Not sure what the name of it was.
Anyways, if you can find that, that is an example of how to do "paying up" with Tetris. Not sure if they would count for microtransactions though.

I don't know how, but EA showed us how to do it. Since it is their game. This is why EA is starting to transfer the same attitude to PC games. Because they believe PC gamers are about the same and they'll just eat up all the microtransactions there are. And the sad part is...they may be right.

You want to know what the really sad part about that Tetris app is? It has an average 4.5 star rating. Real Racing 3 also has an average 4.5 star rating. No wonder EA keeps doing more and more abusive schemes with their microtransactions. Funny enough, it seems they don't have the same Tetris game on Android as far as I can tell. (It seems to be the older version that didn't have a microtransaction and subscription service) Only iOS.

I don't really have any issue with the concept of microtransactions. You want to offer me a skin or a hat for some money, whatever. What I have an issue with is pay-to-win.

It really depends on the game though, I don't agree that every game that has a pay-to-win option is ruined by it. In some cases, the option is more  pay-to-cheat, or pay-to-not-have-to-bother-playing, which simply amuses me. If I have fun playing a game, I want to play it, so why would I spend extra money so I don't have to play the game as much, or can bypass playing it altogether? If I find a game to be grindy and unfun, I simply delete it.
