River City Ransom Sequel ... on Kickstarter!
« on: September 12, 2013, 11:09:11 am »
Had to support this project. I love River City Ransom (specifically EX on the GBA). Incidentally, there is a lesser known Japan exclusive RCR game called The New Hot-Blooded Tough Guy: The Eulogy of Kunio and Co on the SNES which is worth checking out. There is an english fan translation patch available. It doesn't have the classic gameplay, but it is still a decent story driven beat'em up in its own right.

Anyway, back to the Kickstarter....

Officially licensed sequel to the original NES game. Nice pitch. Good reward structure. The only quibble is that none of the original RCR developers are involved. From the brief gameplay video it is clear that the style is very much classic RCR -- although I'm not sure why Kunio has gone ginger. Basically, I'm sold, although it wouldn't have taken much to sell me on this one to be honest. I'm not going to use that well-worn catchphrase, but I will say "Be quiet and receive my cash!"

I used to play this all the time with my sister. Does it have online multiplayer?

Some clarification from the devs...

"Today we wanted to do a better job of communicating our plans for co-op. We mentioned in our rewards that online multiplayer would be contingent on our platform partners at release time. We meant to say that we wouldn't be building and maintaining our own game server for matches, but we do intend on bringing local co-op as well as peer-to-peer network co-op into the game, so that one friend can host others in an online game."

So, yeah. Looks like it. The co-op plans were a bit vague initially, but I guess they just weren't sure whether they would be hosting official servers or not.

Quick update.

Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the original creator of Kunio-Kun and Double Dragon has joined the dev team as a creative consultant!.... nuff said.

Looking forward to seeing this complete, now. Some might say I was stoked.

This has my interest, as RCR was one of my favorite games.  They seem a little light on the details though.

Apparently they're going to open source the game engine. Props.
