Your description of it being a FPS/RTS hybrid in the first line made me think of nuclear dawn at first, which I had tried last year and was absolutely horrible. Then I read on and it sounds good. With a mac version coming out later, I might look into it at this future mac release date.

I've been thoroughly enjoying this game, despite it's massive performance issues (I can play the likes of Shogun 2, Blacklight, and GW2 maxed out, but this game chugs even on low settings) but man it's a boat load of fun.

NS 2 has greater minimal requirements then the recommended requirements of the game you listed.

Which is part of the problem, considering the maps are tiny and there are rarely more  than two dozen people in a map at once, and even on the lowest possible settings it still only yields 40 FPS. That's in the neighborhood of what I get on Planetside 2 turned up all the way in a massive pitched battle.

That's extremely odd.  At the highest settings with an ATI Card, I'm idling at about 90 FPS.  Did you ever try googling your problem?

I will have to give this a try when finances and price coincide :)
Keith, the game will never cost less than a dollar :P

Well, which ATI card? Because if you have something like a 7950, I can't compete with that :P But yeah, only thing I turned up involved disabling multicore rendering (I had a similar issue with TF2 on my older laptop ticking when I had multicore rendering on) but that only made the problem worse. Even tried playing in a window on much lower resolution and I gained maybe 5 FPS that way. Sometimes when there's a lot of action it drops to the teens, it's insane. I could understand that on max settings (I mean, it IS a laptop,  albeit a very good one) but with the settings as low as they can possibly go that's kinda problematic.

EDIT: Ran some monitoring in the background. I was sitting around 20-40 FPS in an empty explore server with about 20% CPU load overall, and my GPU core at around 80%, GPU memory at 45%, this being with the settings turned back up, windowed mode at 1600x900. So it's not like I'm even being taxed, and it's still running that bad and stuttering.

Is that a statement about the game's price, or my finances? ;)  I don't see anywhere to buy it for less than $24.99 right now.

And upon reflection seeing those system requirements I really doubt my desktop (let alone my laptop) can manage to run this smoothly enough that I wouldn't be a liability to a team.

It was a joke, I didn't mean for you to take it personally.  My apologies ;p

Oh, no offense taken surely, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some kind of time-limited $1 NS2 sale :)

This game is one of the best games I've played for a while. I think NS2 will be like TF2 (for me). A kind of game I will play ~900 hours. It's a kind of game that's fun and easy to return to. Bored or dunno what to do? Just play NS2.

While NS2 is awesome it can be frustrating sometimes. Especially when I'm commanding and people refuse to do what I ask them to do. Or even if I'm not commanding and suggest that we raid aliens' tech buildings with jetpacks.. no one does anything. They just camp in front of the alien base afraid to go in. Like they're afraid of dying. Wow big deal... i u die u respawn in 5 or 10 seconds. 5 marines + me. I almost destroyed a tech building alone. 5 other marines stand there with thumbs up in their asses and refuse to do anything anyone asks them to do. In a game before that Aliens were sieging us Marines. I raided 3 tech buildings and thus about 75 resources alone. If others got the thumbs out of their asses we could have got all tech buildings and have chance to make a come back. Sure you will most likely to lose your jetpack which costs 10 resources. Boohoo.. destroying a tech building = -25 resources and lot of time for the aliens so it's worth it.

Majority of people have no idea how to position Sentries correctly. They can't place them correctly and use them in wrong situations and then they think they suck and will try to eject commanders who use sentries. If Marines lose and the commander used Sentries. The loss "was because of sentries and noob commander". If the Marines are winning.. no one whines about the Sentries. It's like at least 90% of people on this planet are logical and tactical retards.

People also can't cover each other. If there are 2 marines and skulks. Marine and skulk As and Bs. If skulk B attacks marine A and skulks A attacks marine B. Killing skulk A is MUCH easier for marine A than for marine B because of the range. Thus marine A should shoot skulk A and marine B should shoot skulk B.

Just like in a MOBA game. You would get the best result if you played with your own clones.

Now that was a lot of complaining but NS2 is still awesome and worth buying. What I said^^ happens in all team based games.

Yeah, I use sentries a lot as a commander.  It's important to keep Skulks off your power, which can shut down entire bases and lead to an unprecedented disaster from which you can't recover.

In fact, people often pony when you rush sentries early (like before phase gates, which I've done before), but what they don't realize is that the longer you wait to get sentries, the less useful they are.  Once the Aliens get bile bomb, they're just food.

I used to think that the Commander was the most important role in the game, but after playing more I've changed my mind.  For both the Aliens and the Marines, it doesn't matter how good your Commander is if your team sucks.  I've seen a single marine take out 3 skulks or even an Onos by himself.  This kind of skill isn't generally expected out of a marine, but it should be.  If the Alien players have that much of a skill gap over you, you're going to lose.
