Showdown Effect
« on: March 06, 2013, 08:36:27 am »
So I'm not sure if anybody else looked into this. Bit I grabbed it at release and have put a few hours into it.  It seemed like a great game in theory - awesomenauts-esque with no skills - just everybody having access to the same weapons and environmental weapons to pick up. Consider this a warning to you platforming game junkies.

After putting some time in... It's quite frustrating and not sure if I like it or not. Could be that it needs some getting used to. The weapons feel very imbalanced. Healing is soooo slow in what's supposed to be a fast paced game. Combat can be frustrating - especially as you can easily lose the reticule mid fight.  The environmental weapons all feel pretty useless as well which is disappointing.

All in all. It feels like there's potential here, but at the moment it hasn't been real enjoyable to me.   I think my biggest issue with combat is imbalance in guns, and that all the weapons are too much of a skill shot (very small aiming reticule which only hits if its directly over he enemy. Contrast on the reticule isn't great so I can easily lose it in the chaos of a fight). The environmental weapon thing is a disappointment as well.

Has potential I think if they patch it though. Character movement is very solid. The theme is fun. Just combat is frustrating.  Also no offline play.  There's other game modes I haven't tried yet.

Anybody else given this game a try?  I also realized this post is more like a review than I really intended. Oh well.

Awesomnauts-esque?  I'll have to give it a try at some point.

On the stuff that you'd like to see patched; from what I can tell this is from the same people who developed Magicka, so they're familiar with the concept of post-release support ;)  Not for all the right reasons, but from what I can tell Magicka did right by its players in the end.

Maybe I'll have to try that out again then. I recall being frustrated because the game ran kinda choppy, and I have a nice enough machine where that should not have been an issue.

I haven't run into any bugs on showdown effect. Which is strange for a paradox published game ;)

Also it is online only, no bots or offline play. The game play and battles is definitely faster paced than awesomenauts.  There's no skills. It's basically you pick a load out of two weapons, which work based on Melee hitting or keeping the crosshairs on the target model while you fire.

Given that these guys did Magicka, they may have been "on notice" that another launch fiasco like that would result in ninjas ;)

Oh, ok.  No offline I can deal with, but no bots is a deal-breaker for me.

I figured as much ;)

There technically is an offline mode. Where you run through the level to kill stationary dummies in the fastest possible time :D

Personally I prefer awesomenauts, but depending on how much support they show this - or maybe once I get a little better at the combat I might change my mind.

Slight derail, but I've always wanted to try Awesomenauts, and after getting Stellar Impact and only being able to play it for a few months before everyone stopped playing it, how's the server populations, etc?

Server population is pretty good. It's all matchmaking and seems to always take the full 2 mins to get into a game. But lately all my games are full or fill shortly after starting. Bots fill in for missing players and its possible to join games in progress. Occasionally you get empty games, especially if you play at off-hours, but its been better for me than it used to be.

I'm a big fan of awesomenauts myself.

Less than a week after release and two different times now I've tried to play with no custom matches or people in ranked games. That was a quick death of a game!
