All in a name
« on: April 08, 2010, 09:16:51 am »
For some reason this came up today. How is the 'Arcen' in 'Arcen Games' pronounced?

I've always presumed 'ar-ken', but I just want to be sure.

You are absolutely right.  And I love you for not thinking 'ar-sen,' which sounds like arse or arson. ;)

Thanks!  It was hard to choose a name, and I didn't realize how many people would say 'Ar-sen.'  If I had known, I probably would have gone Arken, but that hard k just doesn't look as cool.  You actually reminded me that I've been meaning to put a little "how it's pronounced" note up in our header graphic, real faint.  That's up there now on the main site. :)

Balance the equation:
Arcen Games
Arson Gametes
Sonata Is Them

Solve:
Sonata Is Them
An Oats Hits Me
Bok (= evolution of Ekans therefore = Y)

Bok = X

Verify your answer:
Ar(Bok) Games
Arbok Games
A Bag Smoker

X ("Arcen" or "Arken") Games is equal to the value of "A Bag Smoker".
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.

     Um... okayyyy...

     Anyway: I think it's a pretty well-chosen name, myself.

Yeah, since I'm something of a hobby linguist, having created a fair few different, simpler grammar systems, my spontaneous reaction is to say "Arken", with a "K" sound.

"C" usually only turns into an "S" when it's in the beginning of a word in most grammar systems.

Exactly -- linguistics has always been an interest of mine, also, though I'm no expert.  And yet so many people have been saying it the wrong way, it really surprised me.

The way I chose the name was: I opened up my big file of phonemes that I like and have been saving for names (for characters, games, places, whatever), and started combining them and using them with different suffixes and prefixes.  This was the one that I liked best out of the ones that I tried.  I guess that's kind of an unusual way to create a company name, now that I think of it.

Probably, but it's a good, solid name. "Arcen" also communicates something "arcane" with the construction of the word. I like it, it's a good choice!

Yep, exactly, and it has a play off of electricity, as well, which is a nice double meaning.
