Reason?

I'm really pissed about this. I bought DD2 a month before it was released because I thought they would release it 2016 (they said something like this on the EA information) but it seems they meant that it will leave EA there, the game itself is now F2P and I wasted my money on it.
Plus, it is more or less EXACTLY like DD1. The game has nothing new or special that differs it from the first game. Yeah, the graphics are better, the "story" is new and the interface is a lot better to look at as in the first game but except this it's exactly the same game but with less content because there are only 4 of the 8 playable classes. The towers are more or less the same (however the huntress switched from a solely trap based hero to a mix of traps and tower, probably to encourage solo playing more).
They didn't need to make a new game for those changes but they did. This shouldn't be called DD2 because it's nothing new in here (okay, the tavern is MUCH bigger which is a good sign) instead DD free to play because thats what it basically is: a free to play version of Dungeon Defenders.

It's kind of half expected after Dungeon Defenders Eternity. Now they have three games that are almost exactly the same.

As for reasons, well... I think that the graphics is a step-down from DD1 and the menus got much worse as well, you can't find anything. The controls changed but when you start your first game you are not told what to press to do what. I tried to find out pressing different keys and trying to find bindings option in menus but I could not. On top of this, when logging in, I got numerous errors like "server is too buys" and "cannot authorize steam account please restart the game" of course when you restart the game you get the very same errors.

As a rule this is what I expect from early access and that's exactly why I don't play them. I tried this one only because my friend really asked me to give it a go, but when he tried himself, he no longer wanted it in it's current state either.

DDE was actually a rebuild by a third company.  They thought they would try and make it less prone to cheating (DD1's "server" is the current host and the current host can just do whatever the hell he wants, including spawning unique items (TF2 pets, portal gun, etc), stealing items from other players, killing all enemies instantly...you name it).  The community didn't react very well to DDE and so all the new content was backported to DD1 (which is now community updated).

DD2 has a true server-side backend and they're still in the process of balancing, fixing the UI, and producing content.  I still don't consider the game "ready for release" but I'm obviously not in charge of anything. :B

BTW, the free aspect was never a secret.  The $20 you spent during Early Access gave you $30 in premium currency.

What does it mean "community updated" though? Is there source code released or something?

DD2 is at least very buggy as far as I can see. And laggy like hell. I mean, I except bugs at a Beta game, but that amount of lag ruins my tower placements quite often.
But they gave 100 gems free this week because they know that the sever has currently issues.

What I really really REALLY hate about DD (no matter which one) is the fact that the enemies drop way too many items. It's ridiculous. It was already in DD1 an issue and they stil didn't learn from it. DD is about the loot, i get that, but wouldn't it be more rewarding to get somethign with a lower drop chance? because after every level I end up with at least one full bag. Making money in the game is way to easy, just sell everything you find.
Also, they still haven't improved the item management since DD1. It's still a mess to find what item fits you the best. How hard can it be to sort items after stats? All I can do is type or rarity but when it comes to stats I have to check EVERY single item myself. So if you want to build for example a tanky character and look for health and armor stats you have to compare every single item for yourself because the game does not do this. It compares only the stuff you wear with the stuff you hover your mouse over.

And you can build tower everywhere. I don't know if this is intended. You can build them on the smallest ledges and on surfaces where enemies cannot reach them. DD1 had a more straightforward tower building system while this is too crazy, there are no specific tower building areas, anything with a surface is fine, even the roof of a market stand.

I won't say it's a "known" problem, but its one I raise constantly.

That's actually not as big an issue as you'd think.  Ranged enemies will happily plink away at them where they're basically safe.  Also, up on ledges actually reduces those tower's effective range (because it's a sphere).

Just a heads up,

Coop for Nuclear Throne, BoI Rebirth and Spelunky are only local coop, which does not serve OP's purpose.
