So, if you haven't bought Paradox's Cities: Skylines (No relation to Cities XXL), you're missing out. This seems to be the SimCity 5 game that we never got. I've put in 7 hours so far and it's really fun, really well optimized and got a lot of legs to stand on. Even has modding support right out of the gate and no silly DRM scheme that crashes and burns on the first day. I'm having a blast right now. I would like the ability to better track how my bus/train/metro routes are doing though, there isn't a very easy way to do it.

I've taken a bunch of screenshots on my Steam profile:

The sales numbers are impressive.

Simcity 2013, launched by a AAA publisher and a massive budget for advertising, sold 2 million units in two months.

This game with no advertising aside from the paradox tag, managed 250K in one day
http://attackofthefanboy.com/news/cities-skylines-shatters-paradox-sales-record/

Accounting for the massive overhead for SC13 compared to C:S  I would think this game has already achieved greater success.

What excites me, personally, are the reports of just the developer made it so moddable. If this is true paradox is the perfect publisher, for both is as a publisher and its audience just can't get enough of that action.

Things are certainly looking bright.
Life is short. Have fun.

It's really a GREAT game. I've sunk countless hours into it ever since I got into the closed alpha. But don't be fooled! This is no SimCity. There are real failiure states here, and you can actually lose. It's HARD. But I love it! ^^

Yeah, I'd bought it immediately as well, after seeing it in some Twitch streams.

It really IS what Simcity 5 should have been.   And anyone that compares the two in a negative way tends to say "Oh but the actual SIMULATION in Simcity 5 was so much deeper", to which I say "Okay, but that doesnt matter much if placing a single curved road eats up like 1/4th of the space of the whole zone;  the tiny size makes it super unrealistic anyway."

The size really does make a difference, I love how I can have pretty much entirely different areas, quite distant from each other like you see IRL.  I can make a middle-of-freaking-nowhere town like the one I live in and actually have it placed a far distance from the big urban "city" area with all the huge buildings.   Wheras Simcity 5.... yeah.  You couldnt do that.  There wasnt even room for ONE area, let alone more, and let alone more that actually had DISTANCE between them.   Ugh.

The only thing that bugs me is that I miss the random map generation that the Simcity series and similar games always had.

But yeah, the maps are huge.  Like that single tile in your screenshot;  apparently the game by default allows you to unlock a total of 9 tiles over the course of your city's progression.  But there's also a mod that allows you to get all 25 possible tiles unlocked at once (with the final milestone opening all of them instead of just a 9th one).   Saw it on Youtube, and good grief, the available space is absurd.  You could never use that much space.  Computer would explode long before you got that far, and it'd take a millionty years to fill up anyway....

So far, definitely enjoying the whole thing.

.....there's over 230 pages of Workshop stuffs for this already.  Just.... what.   The game JUST came out.

And alot of these things are really nice.

EDIT:  Okay, one problem I've found:  When you go to change a district policy, it'll tell you how much the cost rises/lowers per unit/building.... but it WONT tell you how much the total for the district will change.  That can.... do a bit of damage, financially.   Just a bit.

And.... that's pretty much the only problem I've found.

Okay also it turns out dealing with traffic is hard.  I am not very good at this aspect.  Sure gives you all the right tools to work with it, but they dont help if you dont know the best ways to use them.  Can make a hilarious mess with those.  Hilarious in a Dwarf Fortress sort of way.

Steam workshop on day 1 + a game fundamentally designed to make modding easier + a publisher who encourages mods + a genre for number crunchers = golden age for modding

I don't have it myself (yet), but other people have mentioned roundabouts as being a very solid help for some traffic issues.

I picked this game up. Actually jumped right into modding on day one rather than playing. It works with Blender!

You need to delete sections and rebuild them, linking them together. You can't build road sections that are too short.

I'm still struggling BADLY with traffic in my city of 52k citizens. Managing the flow of traffic between Commerce and Industry is a nightmare at this point. I'm going to let the game cool off for a few days before I tackle it again, because I'm getting really frustrated.

Yeah, the traffic can be really nasty, cant it?

It can be hard to figure out WHY everything has gone horribly wrong.   The spot where it is CURRENTLY wrong is obvious, but that spot is rarely the reason.   My own city isnt very big yet, but it's definitely developing it's own traffic issues pretty fast despite me trying to very carefully set it up to NOT do that beforehand.

Game as a whole continues to be great.
