Can't wait to play Alden Ridge? Try Rogue Survivor!
« on: August 03, 2010, 11:10:57 am »
I'll be honest, I never check the main page of the website. I only read up on what Alden Ridge is all about yesterday, and it sounds awesome. The concept reminded me of another indie game in development: Rogue Survivor.

I learned about this game on the Bay12 forums. Basically a roguelike where your main goal is to survive, rather than fight hordes of monsters and explore. You level up by living through a day, instead of killing things. There's nothing better for you to do than horde up a ton of ammo and food and barricade yourself in some abandoned building. It's still in early alpha, but shows a lot of potential. And it's FREE! So check it out!

I'm awful at the game btw, I've never lived longer than 4 days.

Just gave this a go. Looks fairly promising! I'll keep playing, only survived for 2 days that time.

Wow, that looks a lot like Urban Dead.

Its fun for a quickie sort of coffee-break game. But it lacks a lot of depth that most roguelikes have. And it is far easier to simply insta-die to events.

Oh, you found a hostile survivor with a shotgun. Congrats, you die!
Oh, a zombie master, he has more zombies than you can fight, and this zone doesn't have connecting zone borders, you die!
Oh, a bunch of bikers spawns on you, you die!
Your safehouse door comes under attack by a zombie. He is too tough to fight and there are too many to run from, you die!

Not once have I had a nethack/angband experience where I feel that my own stupidity caused my death. Every time it was "well, that random number generator just killed me". And that really is a shame, part of the appeal of a zombie apocalypse is that you feel like you are the reason for your own survival/failure. I think Fort Zombie hits this feeling much better.

I agree, but the game is still in early alpha and I think it shows promise.
