Oh yes, Ogre Battle 64 was an awesome game! I think I got about the most evil ending while -trying- to pick the good choices though. Paying attention to unit alignment and capturing/liberating cities was a pain.
Achievement Unlocked: You messed the world up about as badly as could be imagined!

Achievement Unlocked: And it wasn't even intentional, wow!

;)

SPOILER:

My allies all said "No you're the badguy" at the end and attacked me :( I don't exactly recall what happened next but I think I went into self-imposed exile after killing them all.

12... Norgard to win in 12... WHAT?  Holy crap.  I agree, attack animations were highly distracting (though pretty the first hundred and 50 times, kinda like Nectaris).  I'm kinda suprised you were able to unit level that fast.
To clarify, I took out the empire on turn 12; I hadn't taken out the other countries at that point.  In fact my defensive situation was somewhat... interesting after that.  But by then I had enough knights it wasn't a big deal.

I had played the game through several times at that point and it was mainly a matter of knowing where to aim strategically and not getting unlucky on too many rolls.  Armies with a bunch of holy-word (and geno, if lacking in white-element knights, as in this case) casters are unstoppable.  I don't think I had a full seraph/fafnir army by the 12th turn but I had archangels and that's enough.  Upgraded dragons help.

Funny thing is you can also steamroll the game with an all-jinn army (on attack, more conventional to hold castles) with a bit of luck and a willingness to roll out the limburger.

But it's more fun to play it "normally" a few times :)

And yea, I'd heard of Master of Monsters as another really incredible game and thought of mentioning it here, I'd just never played it.

After playing Shogun 2 for the first time as the Oda, and winning Japan by doing no less then deploying 3x larger armies throughout the game and then giving said peasants guns a decade before anyone else, I'm looking for another game where I use technologically advanced peasants to steamroll uppity elites who are backward in time.
Life is short. Have fun.

hehe ;) Ogre Battles I am not a huge fan of, way way too much micro management and Master of Monsters is very very slowly paced.. but aside that, I checked out Immortal and.. that difficulty is pretty absurd, also no tutorial ;P Though seems more like skill based puzzle game.. thank god for state saves in emulators ;p

The lad RPG series seems very Interesting, turn based combat in an proper RPG.. mhhhh I played (and have) a lot of the older tactical games, like Bahamut Lagoon (which I already played through) and anything with Ogre in it's name.

More a fan of tactic games where the story and tactics are tightly linked (ie to 1 group) not so much half a dozen groups. But this turned out to be a very nice turnover in terms of getting good games to look at ;p

Yes, the immortal is brutal. And not necessarily in a fair way. But it is kinda funny. You can actually die in the first room.

Save states would actually improve it nicely. But keep multiple ones, it's actually possible to unknowningly do something that screws you out of passing a later puzzle.

So I sunk about 1 hour so far into Suikoden looks pretty spiffy ;) Got the entire set of Arc the Lad as well. And checking out Valkyrie Profile.. seems to have gotten very good ratings everywhere...  while I am at PS1 games, any other games I should be aware of for that?

Arc the Lad is pretty cool ;p

Vanguard Bandits, man.  Vanguard Bandits.

Already mentioned it, but Star Ocean 2 is definitely worth a look.  Starts a little slow but play through the end of the first dungeon and I think you'll be hooked on the battle system.

+1 to Vanguard Bandits.

In the same vein I'd suggest Front Mission 3 (PS1). Combat is a bit on the simple/unbalanced side, but hey, it's giant customizable robots blowing each other up against the backdrop of a fun geopolitical thriller.

Yea, Front Mission 3 was quite enjoyable for me too.

Very. Very. Long.  At least it felt that way to me, but it was fun.  And the two different story paths (branching from really early in the game) helped on both the fun and the length.
