Mouse Click sound
« on: April 28, 2012, 09:44:09 pm »
I know this is a weird request and probably a lot to ask, but I absolutely hate that sound. I cannot stand it. It irritates the hell out of me to no end. With this being the case, I must play this game without sounds enabled (yes, it irritates me that bad).

Is it possible for me to disable this sound or do the developers have any plans in mind to create their own unique sound? Perhaps there a specific line in the ini file that will allow me to disable that one particular mouse click sound so I never have to hear it again? Honestly, nails on a chalkboard would be more pleasing to me than this generic, and overly annoying sound.

I doubt they will do something like this for just one annoying sound. There is another option available right now however. In you AVVW folder, go to RuntimeData/Sounds/ButtonClick.ogg. This is the mouse click sound. Go ahead and replace it with an empty ogg file if you want to get rid of the sound.

I recognize that click from very very early Windows programs in mid 90's.  I swear it's the same thing.

Thank you Tyber, but I do not have that file in my Sounds folder. The only sound files I have are HowlingWind, LightRain, and WindyRain. I'm going to try to add the empty ogg file for the button click to see what happens. Edit: Didn't work. Anyone have any more ideas?

As for the sound itself, if I remember correctly, it's a generic mouse click sound from IBM.

That's...odd. I have no idea why you would be missing sound files and still be able to hear them.

Hmm, are you running Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Those file may be in your Virtual store, which is a way that Windows can "fudge" write access to folders to application that expect it but don't have it.
To the program, the real folder and the "virtual store" folder are merged and look like one big folder. But they are two separate places on the actual file system. This way, the real folder can have restrictive permissions, but application that expect write access to that folder will instead have their write requests "redirected" to the virtual store folder, which they will have write access to.
IMO, it is a very awkward hack.
I believe we have had reports of some installations of AI War, especially done through a "psuedo-installer" like Steam, installing many of the files under the virtual store instead of the actual install directory. I would suspect that some people would encounter similar situations for AVWW.

For most people virtual store can be found at C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore
You may want to try to see if you can find your missing files there.

Amusingly, there is little to no official Microsoft documentation about this feature. There are ways to avoid it if you are willing to dig into NTFS permissions.

I'm running Vista and playing this game through Steam. I just checked my Virtual Store folder and I only have a hidden Program Files folder with nVidia files inside.

It's not the same sound file from anywhere in early windows days.  And the sounds are stored in a unity 3D resources package that you unfortunately can't directly replace.  TyberZann, you only have those extra files there from your earlier days of being in the beta.

The mouse click is not all that frequent of a sound in the first place during most of gameplay; I'm surprised it garners such hate.  I'll ask Pablo to look at doing something more interesting anyhow (Keith is not a fan of that sound either), but currently he's bedridden with a bad fever and stomach virus, so I doubt it will be in the next day or so.

I appreciate you looking into this and letting me know that something is in the works. Everyone has their little quirks and pet peeves - it just so happens that one of my two biggest ones would be that particular sound.

Considering how amazing the music tracks are to this game, I cannot wait to hear what Pablo cooks up.

Any word on a new sound being implemented?

We haven't forgotten!  Pablo first was out sick a bit, and then it's really kind of a stumper of a problem in a lot of ways.  But thanks for the reminder, he's going to toss around some ideas with me today that he'd been working on.

Alright guys,

Let's get some feedback here. I'm going to upload five different click sounds named click1.ogg, click2.ogg, click3.ogg, click4.ogg, and click5.ogg.

Tell me which one of these you like best and we'll go with that!

Here's the 5th one. I could only attach 4 files at a time per post.

I appreciate all the hard work you guys have been putting into this entire game and I am simply stunned by the personal feel the developers give to the consumer - you just don't find that anywhere these days.

As for the sound files, I'm partial to the second and third ones. The first seems a bit loud to me, but it would be fine to have any of them over the current one.

It's probably my version of VLC player, but four and five didn't play a sound for me, so I cannot comment on those two.

Lastly, it's probably a bit late, but I wanted to say I'm loving the soundtrack to the game. Brings back a lot of nostalgia from the old NES and SNES days.

Thanks again.

Absolutely! So, the second one is good right now. We'll see what a few more people say, and then I'll make my choice. Thanks for the input!
