Stuck on "finding servers" tried everything :(
« on: August 29, 2012, 07:31:58 am »
I'm pretty much out of options on how to connect to other players servers. I have tried...

Port fowarding router settings ( Added 32322 UDP+TCP)
Enabled DMZ
Added exception for 32322 UDP+TCP in windows firewall settings ( Also disabled windows firewall completely)
Turning AVG off

Just tried Tunngle today, cannot find servers when using the search LAN option. I'm in the AVWW channel and can see other players.

Must be something to do with my ISP, which is SKY Broadband in the UK.

Is there anything else i could try? Or am i doomed to only experience this game in single player :(

Also if there is nothing else i can try , is there any websites that advertise servers so i can try directly connecting to the ip address or one who uses another port instead of this dreaded 32322 one.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi there,

If you're having trouble seeing other people's servers, then one of two things is happening.  Either 1) there are no servers at the time you are looking, which doesn't sound like it's the case since you're in the channel with other folks -- so long as they advertised their server, or 2) some sort of firewall is blocking outgoing requests from AVWW.

Port forwarding and router settings really shouldn't be involved until you are actually trying to connect to someone's server.  And even there, you should have to make no changes unless they are trying to connect to you.

When I say "firewall" above, what I really mean is "software firewall."  Are you able to see beta updates of the game when you start the game?  If not, then that too is being blocked by a software firewall.  Something like zone alarm, windows firewall, the firewall in the Norton software, or various others.

If you make an exception for AVWW in any software firewall(s) you have, then you should be able to see the server listings and the beta updates.  After that point, assuming that the other person has their server set up correctly, you should be able to connect to them.

The fact that it doesn't even work over Tunngle makes it even more likely that this is a software firewall.  However, it's possible that searching on the LAN on Tunngle might not actually find results in general.  If you know who has the server up on the Tunngle list, then entering their Tunngle IP for a direct connection is a better way to test that.  Finding LAN games involves sending a kind of broadcast packet over the local network which some of the VPN services don't pass along; I'm not sure about Tunngle.

By the way, be careful with the DMZ settings on your router -- you probably want to turn that back off to avoid having any problems with malicious intrusions into your network from outside.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply x4000

Seems the problem was that there was just no one hosting , just checked a few things now and it has found 1 server (But its full! 3/3 players lol!)

I was able to see the updates before so just leaves me to believe not many people are hosting any games at the moment?

Also i took my router back out of DMZ mode, as you recommended, probably not a good idea in the end.

Thanks again.

Glad I could help!

In terms of the hosting, I think that most people tend to host private servers.

I think AVWW is in something of a lull atm, so you'll likely see a few servers up. After the next major update, you can probably expect to see more of them up.

Even at the height of things, there were relatively few public servers -- a dozen or so.  Lots of people were playing multi, though, so my conclusion is that the private servers with friends are more popular.

This is pretty much the case for every game, save for popular competitive shooters or RTSs such as Starcraft and Team fortress.

Well, that's good to know.  It's been a decade or so before I was involved in any public servers aside from popular FPS games.  Most of my gaming is on private servers, LAN, local co-op, or solo these days.
