Check out Cinth's avatar! Backer tier interest in this?
« on: November 10, 2016, 01:56:43 pm »
His profile: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=9005

I imagine he'll post in here so that you don't have to actually click that, but basically it has a rotating "coin" of the fighter icon from AI War 2 that he made, and then turned into a gif, etc.

This is something we've been thinking about for some sort of backer tier, and he can explain that better.  I thought I'd raise the subject, though.

Also: he's been cutting out vertices like a pro on those icons, letting us keep some high fidelity for what Blue models in Maya (already going for low poly), but with a lot of hand editing to get it just right.  I'm really impressed with how darn cool it turns out in the end, and he's quite fast at it.  Technical work meets art work makes beauty and performance. :)

Posting for your convenience! And don't click that, it's full of nastiness.

he can explain that better.

Not really.

I had an idea based around something I saw in some intro vids Chris gave me that might keep those farzoom icons looking pretty good, and get the count lower for performance purposes.  I then thought it would look pretty cool as a coin and made the one I have as my avatar.  That's a prototype and I thought maybe you all would like one.

This is something we've been thinking about for some sort of backer tier

I'd put a bit more time into each, but this is the general idea.  I'd also give Chris the raw versions of the finished coins so he can jazz them up with effects and make them look better in general.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Super neat, that's for sure.
If I backed at a level that got one, I'd not use it (I don't think anyone would recognize me any more). But that isn't me saying "don't use them"!

Question: Would it be a profile picture or simply a little icon on the bottom like the Steam handle thingy when you put your Steam number in?

I was thinking of doing these like the backer tier avatars so folks like our resident raptor can do both.  It would also be a way to keep others from hijacking the gifs and using them if they didn't get them naturally.

Edit:  I have mine as an avatar to show it off.  I think it's pretty cool.  They don't have to be something that goes in that spot.  They also need to be bigger than the Steamworks icon because you wouldn't be able to see what it is if it is that small.

Those are pretty cool, but it makes more sense as an addon than a tier to me. "Want one of those? Add $10" or whatever.

Oh, if it was an extra icon that isn't mutually exclusive with my avatar I'd use it.

I'm not a fan of moving avatar icons and banners/signatures on forums in general. If something like this were to come out I'd probably add it/them to Ad-blocker.  :-\

I'd rather just an icon (see attached) similar to those on the paradox forum.

That's fair.  I only have two "animated" icons that I've ever used anywhere.
And one was because the forum switched to a new service and it had Issues.
One of which was to "never actually load the damn content" that had a cute custom loading gif.

So I did this:

One person was actually fooled at one point.

I tried getting an updated version that didn't have the black glitch, but there wasn't one (the artist that made it didn't have a better copy and it was later updated to not have that issue, but also be much smaller, and then all together replaced).

Are these used only around here? If so, pass.

I honestly think that giving people forum icons and whatnot for here isn't a huge selling point in any way except for people who already frequent these forums.

Case in point, I've been a member of Paradox's forums for a long while and the loooooong list of icons some people have are more hilarious to me than cool. I include myself in that list. :P

That said, I think gif avatars are generally more distracting than fun. Apparently I'm an old grump. lol
