Youngling AI is really weird.
« on: November 16, 2010, 10:06:27 am »
I'm not sure this is even a bug or not but everytime there is a lot of younglings in a system most of them seem to (go) off to the other side of the galaxy and harass some system 4 hops away and be 70% dead by the time they get there. This seems to happen with all sources of Younglings - waves, preservation guardians, clusters,  and roaming enclaves.  Younglings would be a lot meaner if they stayed put.

There also seems to be some weirdness with target prioritization. This is just a feeling atm, and I know weasels are supposed to suck up missiles, but i have to constantly lead my ships around by the nose so that they attack the proper enemy armor type.

Its natural for the youngling ships to die quickly. They were modeled after cancer kids  :'(

Cure cancer, and than we can talk about making these last longer.

Umm, I certainly hope that isn't the case.  That would seem to be to be in VERY poor taste.  (And especially coming from the standpoint of someone who has worked on a pediatric oncology ward.)

They're supposed to be mayflies, only living for a day. Their only connection to "cancer kids" is that the money from  the expansion goes to the Child's Play charity and x wanted "children" in the name as a result. No one would be tasteless enough to model a Sci Fi race after terminally ill children, least of all the Arcen guys.

Are you referring to the child's play charity? The charity is focused on bringing enjoyment to kids spending an excessive amount of time in hospitals. They may or may not have cancer.

Or maybe you aren't serious and is just a tasteless joke...

As a side note, many children recover from cancer each and every year. I happen to know one, and she's just fine. I also know adults with cancer who are doing well as could be expected. It's not a guaranteed death sentence.

I would second that.  Many forms of childhood cancer have extremely high cure rates (>95%).  The unfortunate part for most of them is that they end up spending such a large portion of their childhood in a hospital setting instead of doing normal kid-things.

Which, as a side note, is why Child's Play is a nice organization. The least we can do for those kids is give them some fun things to do while they're stuck in the hospital.

Hey now,   :'( indicates sad, not joke!

The ships are of course not actually based on the lifespan of children with cancer; Vinraith explains this pretty well, "They're supposed to be mayflies, only living for a day."

I had better not become the guy known for picking on cancer kids! I'm studying nursing right now, I'm not heartless, pinkyswear   ;)

younglings in general are still a question mark in terms of usefulness
