Transport Unloading...NOT!
« on: January 22, 2011, 03:00:14 pm »
My transport refuses to unload.

I'm sure there is some very simple explanation for this, of which I simply haven't yet heard due to the lack of documentation, but please enlighten me:

I packed my mobile builders, engineer drones, rebuilders, and a lot of mkI fleet ships into a transport, gave it a starship escort, moved into the enemy system and made a run out of the ion cannon's range. Since when does moving at extreme ranges slow you down, by the way?

Anyways, I've just cleared IC range, I click the unload button, I try the unload menu, but no cigar. They refuse to leave.

OH WHY MUST THIS BE?  :'(

Transports cannot unload outside the range in which buildings can be built.  This is to prevent various exploits players were perpetrating in deep space.

Going very far away from the planet center reduces speed as of quite a while ago (pre-Unity-port I think).  This was to prevent various other exploits players were perpetrating in deep space :)

IIRC you can't unload them outside the range of the planet's Gravitational Pull. Leaving that area also causes your speed to go down. IIRC that's also the range you can't build ships at. Basically you can't do that much out there.

EDIT: aww, I typed to slow...

BTW I'm pretty sure you can see this range on the minimap overlay (Hold T by default)

This seems to catch every new player. I know it did me. Probably needs some kind of warning message when it happens. I think that suggestion is already on mantis somewhere though.

On a (somewhat) related note, is it intentional that transports continue unloading even if you put more troops in them? for instance I unloaded at a planet which I didn't realise had an ai eye, so I wanted to get my troops quickly back in the transports. unfortunately they won't stop unloading till they reach empty, even if you put a hundred ships back inside. This led to some amusing ship cycling antics. :P

Yes, can I highly recommend highlighting this somewhere on the wiki/manual? It's pretty important to understand for newbies like us.
