I honestly think the cap is fine. Put a mercenary space dock on control group 0, and tell it to not build if your total resources are below, say, 1,000,000 (in the ctrls-by-control-group menu). That way, you have 500k/500k at all times to refleet elsewhere.
Unfortunately, that's not quite how it works.
It means you have 1,000,000 M+C is reserve - not 500k/500k.  In fact, since so few ships have even M/C costs, you usually end up with 999,999/1 as your 1,000,000 reserved resources.
I wish that it applied evenly to each resource... but this will stop being a concern when crystal goes away.

I'd love to see the ability to set the cutoffs for repair and construction be able to be set separately, or even just have one but not the other.
Yes, oh so very yes.  I would like to be able to set these seperately as well, since I'd be setting the repair value to several times to construction value almost all the time.  Instead I am forced to do manual repairing all over the place... boo.

Well, I know it doesn't necessarily apply evenly, but it's always applied evenly to me.

The cap used to be much lower, didn't it? Like 300k or something.

Yep, way back in the day before the "age of zeros in stats" came along. :P

Though to be fair, back in those days, the armor system was even more confusing than it is now. Just to give you an idea of how confusing it was, it was not deterministic, it was probabilistic.  :o

There was like that random chance of shielding hits wasn't there?

Yes and it was armor vs. how much closer the attacker is than its max range. Pretty cool once you figured it out but not super intuitive.

Heh, it wasn't even called armor either, they were called shields and totally different from force fields.

And they were not even shields, more like ECM as it reduced the range you could be targeted from.

Kind of like radar dampening actually, but rather then being a fixed range it reduced an enemy's firing range by a fixed amount.

It was actually a very neat mechanic, but I'm not sure I miss it, it did lead to some very strange engagements.

Yeah, the shield system was...fascinating, to say the least :P

Those were the days when AI War "bullets" actually covered the screen with Asteroids(tm)-like effects.

Anyway, if folks are feeling nostalgic, 3.189 is the last official AI War stable before the unity stuff. I think this might be before the reassignment of which ships got bonuses against other ships.

It'd be nice if there was a building you could research and build, 1 per solar system for example, that let you store say..another 300,000 resources.  It could be set up if its destroyed you lose 300k even if you are below your current cap too so it isn't without some risks =)

That actually isn't that bad of an idea.  We could have a 1-cap structure that you can place on planets to raise your M+C cap, or tie it to the amount of logistic/economic command stations you have, or something along those lines.  It wouldn't be too bad if you needed to take AIP hits from conquering planets to raise your cap.

Well, we already have distribution nodes, and you don"t even need to cap them, just destroy(Raid starships!), they pretty much give 200k-300k as well. :P

He means a structure that increases storage capacity.

I don't know that we really need an increased storage capacity. It would be nice if it was just made 1,000,000/1,000,000 caps (as in, if resource caps got a slight buff of +1 capacity each) for the sake of even numbers, but you can still deal with resources in excess.

I have a better idea - Increase resource caps by something like .139 or something silly like that.

That wouldn't help at all! D=
Although the .139 will actually be a sign that you let your resources cap. The only way to get .139 of a metal is to have to throw the rest of that little metal piece away.
