Tutorial Problem
« on: October 30, 2010, 03:16:07 am »
Whenever I do a gate-raid in the tutorial, all of the ships around the command center and gate come attack my home system.  It's about 500ish level 4 ships.  I made sure not to attack the command center.  I've tried attacking and dieing, attacking and leaving, attacking and leaving inside the transports.  They all end up with me losing.  Talked with someone in the IRC and he thinks the tutorial might need to be tweaked.  Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong or are others having similar problems?

Edit:  Attached the save right before I attempt the gate raid.

The tutorial seems to mean well, but ai units in general seem to be more aggressive than they were back in the day.. and after two hours of reinforcing, hes already hit the point of border aggression

Also, I note you havent built either of your bonus ships - generally, youll want to have as many ships as you can, including those mk1 bonus ships.
That, and you have a ton of knowledge sitting around for no reason :p use it

With a bunch more turrets up and the full fleet in place, it was really not that hard to stand the counter-attack.. anti-armor kills both tanks and bombers very well, for instance.

On a side note: Why are there guardians in that system? its adjacent to the homeworld, there shouldnt be any..

Guys, I found a typo in the tutorial text. I'm not sure where to report it, since it's not technically a bug.

Basically, "structures" is spelt "strcutures" in the last beginner tutorial, around the point where the fighters attack your ARS / Advanced Factory.

zdman, welcome to the forums :)  Sorry to hear that the AI was interfering with your learning process ;)

The guard logic there is that if you fire upon _any_ of the units guarding the command station (or the station itself), _all_ of them are freed to attack.  Note that if you don't fire upon them (even if you are fired upon) they won't free.  I don't know if the warp gate is actually guarding the station.

Anyway, we might need to suppress some part of that logic for the tutorial, since it does tell you to do that gate-raid.

Maybe it should take the time to instruct you in the art of handling 500 MkIV ships with low-tech stuff ;D

---

Lance, the reason he has a lot of knowledge sitting around is that the tutorial specifically tells them not to use it until told to do so ;)

Kron, typos are bugs, and can go in our bug tracker:

It won't be a very high priority, but we do get around to those text issues.

(for that matter, this original report would be tracker material too, but I think I can get it from what's been said)

I managed to finally finish the tutorial on my second run.  Took me 4 hours of game time.  I got to the gate raid in under an hour but it still had a ton of guys.  My first attempt didn't even make it to the gate.  But, when they counter attacked, I was barely able to stop them.  They (the left overs that were not snared from the tractor beams) went straight for my command post, destroyed my shields, and luckily just stopped attacking my command post and went after my military.  After that, I just sent a small group of bombers to take out the gate.  After that, I followed the rest which was easy until the AI home world.  My first attempt caused me to lose my forward base and cut off my advanced factory that I couldn't really afford to use anyways.  Luckily, that large wave just stayed there and I was able to bypass them to get to the AI world.  So, a second raid ended with my force destroyed but this time, they traveled 2 of their worlds and then just stopped.  My last attempt had me skip all of those forces which left the home world with an ok force but not enough to stop me so I was able to finish it.

I will say that was the most difficult tutorial I have ever played.  I enjoyed it but the tutorial is very misleading.  You go from small groups of level 1 and 2's to large groups of level 4's and 5's.  I was never prepared for those counter attacks.
