Riot starship force fields
« on: August 03, 2011, 04:24:57 am »
Two questions about Riot starship force fields:

1)  Do ships under the force fields of Riot starships (including the Riot starship itself) have their damage reduced similar to those under regular force fields?

2) What exactly does building a Riot starship with two force field modules do?  Does it give the ship one force field with double health, two force fields that split damage between them, or something else?

Great game by the way, I really like how the AI and I are playing different but completely transparent games - allows it to be challenging without feeling like blatant (and lame) cheating.

1) No, they deal full damage, I am pretty sure the tooltip for the riot shield states this.
2) Neither. It has two separate shields with separate health, however they take damage just like any other force field (I am unsure what determines which force field takes damage first when a unit under two force fields are hit)

Me too

Odd, because when I give a Riot Starship 2 shield modules it only shows up as one. Is this just a graphic thing?

I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Looks like a placement bug. There are two force fields, conveniently placed one directly on top of the other, so you cannot tell them apart. This will however cause both force fields to cover the ship even at 1 health, so I suppose it may be intentional.. As a note, due to how I believe force field work, it will almost exactly act as though there is one force field with double the stats.

Thanks for the help.  I'm using version 5.000, and the ingame tooltip mentions nothing about the lack of damage reduction, so I think a sentence added to clarify that aspect would be helpful.

A few things of note; The 'larger' forcefield will always take damage first, meaning that whichever force field has more hitpoints will take damage (because it is larger)

However, for a few things.. Once upon a time, forcefields had armor (i think this was removed, unfortunately... i really liked the concept of a low hp ff with high armor being harder to kill but vulnerable to siege weapons). In any case, If a shot will fully kill a forcefield module, it will just die, and no overkill damage is dealt to the riot starship. This means even a mk3 siege starship will take a full shot to destroy the forcefield, and an additional full shot to destroy the next forcefield, despite it having major amounts of overkill. This makes riot starships considerably awesome at tanking.

A final word - I tend to lose the most riot starships when i run out of resources. If my riot starships cant be fabricating replacement shields, they are nowhere near as tanky.
