And maybe it's just me, but I really don't like vampire claws. They're pretty bad assassins because they use fusion cutters, and they're just not as good combat ships as cutlasses or viral shredders. Their vampirism isn't really noticeable either. I just don't see the point.

I personally am not a fan of any of the melee ships, but that's just me.  Vampires just happen to be the worst of the bunch, but I tend to ignore commenting on them because I'm pretty biased against them.

Quote
If Raid SSs are better than EyeBots at raiding why would I pick EyeBots over other bonus ships? EyeBots have only 2 useful damage multipliers. 1 of them is sometimes useful in combat (Heavy(Hybrids)).
Raids are a little better, but a cap of them is literally 10x as expensive. Early on it's nice just being able to throw eye bots at a raid engine or ion cannon or something and not care how many make it back.

And on higher difficulties they're good at holding off the brutal missile frigate waves you get early on until you can find a botnet golem or something.
Precisely.  It's a question of cost vs. ability.  And in my current game against the Peacemaker I'd KILL for a flock of Eyebots.  Cloaking, Forcefield ignoring, and can't be targetted by Mass Drivers... YES PLEASE.

True but I don't think there's any reason to pick EyeBots over Autocannons. Autocannons have bonus vs Ion Cannons (ultra heavy) and they're much faster.

EDIT: OH MY BAD. I didn't remember Autocannons dont ignore Force Fields!!  :o

Mark I is small enough you don't often get max targets.
Oh?  Huh, didn't realize that. For 5.040 just made all of the grenade launcher grenades have an explosion radius of 500 instead of 200/300/400/500/600.
Ha my question to Kahuna led to a balance change  :)

Autocannons usually seem rather meeeeh. But I was under the impression that VAmpires were recently buffed?

On vampires, they had a moderate buff to raw stats and obtained cloaking. I personally think they'e fine - not meant to be sent into an enemy planet alone fine, but hunting long-range stuff fine.

The most interesting buff to Eyebots I could see, that wouldn't totally screw players, would be making them Gravity Immune.  They already can't get positive speed boosts, so making them immune to negative boosts (given their terrible speed) would be nice.  I've posted before that increasing their attack cooldown by 1 second, but keeping their DPS the same would give them a stronger out-of-cloak alpha attack for assassinations, but it gets really scary for players.  But maybe a change to multipliers would be a better solution, so at least Human Command Stations don't die any faster than they already do to a wave of Eyebots.

On Vampire Claws, I just wish their vampirism ability was stronger.  It just seems to never make enough of a difference.  On paper it looks like it should work out, but I think the problem is melee ships don't actually get their paper DPS because they are "out-of-range" of melee attacks in between swings which causes their actual attack cooldown to be slightly greater than is listed.  Which is doubly a problem when a units survivability is based on damage dealt.  I mean between Shredders, Claws and Cutlasses, Claws have the lowest health and around half the ship cap.  They are super fragile in practice.

Wow, wait, we were talking Eyebots? Those became rather scary with their last buff. Not sure I'd want them buffed further, but then I haven't used them lately.

We want to buff Vampire Claws?  Oh god no.  They aren't meant to be a fire-and-forget assassination squad, they are huge damage sponges, distracting the enemy fleet with their healing ability while you do the damage from behind (pun intended).  But seriously, leave those alone.

Yea, I included the Eye Bots and Vampire Claws and other-ones-I-really-don't-think-need-a-buff on the poll for completeness, but I don't expect to see many votes go their way ;)

Poll is up, fyi.

The primary strength of autocannons (in my opinion) is supposed to be their ability to "eat" enemy armor slowly and make them easier to kill for the rest of the fleet.  Unfortunately armor's really not that big of a deal typically so that aspect is lackluster.  They have a bonus against Structural which is nice, but I think my main complaint is that they're so damn useless in a fleet.  Outside of heavily micromanaged raiding they die in droves and just don't do that much in return.  Personally I think there's better raiders and better fleet ships, which leaves Autocannons in a place I won't really touch.  They seem much better in the hands of the AI with the bonus to Turrets, so maybe we should leave them alone?

What do you guys think about the Tachyon Microfighters?  To me they just seem like glorified fighters, the "Tachyon" effect is basically insignificant.

I think it would be cool if we made their Tachyon Range something massive (increasing by level) to make them useful.

Anything armor related (rotters, autocannons etc) would indirectly get a buff if armor was somehow made more important. I'm not sure if it's just down to me playing too easy difficulty, not paying attention, or armor really being "not a big deal", but I rarely find that armor makes a difference.

I wouldn't mind the "heath suck" rate of the vampire claw get a boost, and maybe a bit of HP buff, but they are not bad enough for me to consider them worst.

Unless you pop Wormhole Guardposts, Microfighter reinforcement pretty much shuts down all your attempts to clear Tachyon Guardposts.  They're not that great in human hands, but the AI makes plenty of use out of them shutting down most cloaker strategies.

Which buff are you referring to?  I can't see a buff to them since as far back as 5.0.  Vampire Claws got buffed (more health...and it is still terribly low) and cloaking.
