Still one of the best games around
« on: September 29, 2013, 01:23:33 pm »
Hi guys, Keith and Chris and Pablo and all others at Arcen Games, it is good to see you are still going strong.

As an old fan that probably played AIWar way too much and therefore needed a long pause, I decided to check up to see what it was I spent so much time on a few years ago. And I must say, what I see is amazing. The game is even better than I remember it. At first I was a bit disappointed that you had nerfed the Ion Cannons, but I soon found out that now I am supposed to fear the alarm bots (or what they are called). I managed to get beaten quite a few times before I finally won a game, I must admit I had to turn down the difficulty to 6.0 on a realistic hub map - back then I could win over the ai on 7.3, (not that I always did, though) and it is my goal to be able to do this again.

The only thing I really miss are the knowledge raids. But Chris never liked that people did knowledge raids, and it is his game, so he has every right to make it harder. And the compromise you guys made is great, there is no more mindless knowledge raiding, but if I really want that extra upgrade, I can do a knowledge raid and pay the price. It even has made the transports meaningful to me, I never used them before, thought it was kind of cheating, but now I believe it is almost a neccessity.

And Keith has thought up some great new and even more evil obstacles on my path to victory; I had everything ready for winning (ready to take out the ai's first home planet, then rush through a prepared path to take out the other) when it dawned on my that I had to eliminate some data centers (or what they are called) placed randomly throughout the universe, before I could even touch his mother planet. That set me back several hours. I should have read the tool tips beforehand, I guess.

I see there are several new features that I don't know how to use, like the new menus with formation planning, that I don't know how to activate, but I guess it is documented somewhere.

A special thanks to Pablo for the guitar solos, great work. AIWar is one of the few games where I do not turn off the music. I only wish there was more. Is it possible to buy a musical expansion pack?

I was so positively surprised by the state of the game that I just bought the Spire expansion, and am looking forward to meet a lot more evil in the next few days (installing it while writing). My ambition is to win a game on difficulty 7.3 with all options on. One can always dream ;).

And I see there are two more expansions that I haven't tried yet.  Awesome.

Cheers from a happy customer

Good news is the Light of the Spire expansion comes with "over 40 minutes of new in-game music" and the further expansions add even more!

Those are called core shield generators, and you can turn that off in the game setup. Chris came up with that bad idea. The rest of your post is right on target! It's gotten better with time.

Someone had to open the old CSG wound, I guess ;)

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game after your return!  Wow, LotS is new to you?  Yea, that's been a long time.

Just to clarify in case you didn't know: knowledge raiding is still there, it's just called knowledge hacking and you do it by building a hacker and then having the hacker build a knowledge hacker on the target planet.  Oh, and then not die.  That's an important step.

There are other hacks you can do and they share a resource.

Well, I kind of like those Core Shield Generators. I guess I called them data centers because they reminded me of that set of structures that gives you AIP when you eliminate them, until you kill the last one, then you get a huge AIP reduction. I am not gonna turn CSGs off, that is for sure.

And yes, I found out about hacking, I see this is one of the big things now. I was very opposed to the elimination of knowledge raiding, but now, when knowledge hacking is in place, I think it is a far better mechanic. Far more challenging. I am looking forward to figuring out how, when and where to use which hack.

The wiki is great, it always was, but it is much more comprehensive now. Kudos to the guys and gals that maintain this invaluable data center. I also find the in-game documentation a lot better than it was.

Back in 2011, when I participated in a lot of beta testing, I experienced the design progress in an incremental way, ie. I didn't really see it. Now, after a long break, I can really appreciate how the game has progressed. It is still the same game, I didn't have to learn everything over again, but I had to change my ways, because so many things have changed.

Which is a good thing, imo. After all, when I play a video game, my opponent really isn't the computer, but the designer of the game. He is the guy who has put up all those obstacles. And if/when I find an easy way to overcome those, it is only appropriate that the designer changes things so they become harder. If things become too hard, I can always lower the ai level. Or turn off that feature. Or, if it cannot be turned off, complain to the devs ;D.

I cranked the ai level back up on 7, and now I am trying out the Spire campaign. I don't expect to win, but it is okay, loosing is fun!

I see you have got yourself another daughter, Keith, congratulations! But seeing this is your third child, I don't feel sorry for you, you will have learned by now how to sleep with your eyes open ;).

PS to Pablo: I found out that you are not the guy pulling the guitar strings, but someone named Ted. Please tell him that he has made a great impression on an old professional guitarist. I almost cried, I thought nobody played that kind of guitar anymore, except old people like me. But kudos to you for finding him and using him in your compositions. And, of course, kudos to you for your compositions. Your minimalist approach is the perfect counterpoint to this complex game.

Yes, I will have to learn those names again. But at least I found the abbreviations in the wiki, so maybe now I can understand what you all are talking about ;).
