Issue with Mobile Redirector Posts
« on: January 30, 2012, 05:18:47 pm »
Recently (I believe), the behavior of FRD (Free-Roaming Defender) was changed.  It used to be that issuing cross-planet FRDs to a group of units would make them travel from planet to planet, killing everything on each planet before moving to the next.

The behavior was changed so that (even though the units are outlined in pink), the FRD does not "activate" until the units reach the target planet.  While this is advantageous in many situations, it does create a few problems.

For one thing, the Mobile Redirector Posts can no longer make FRD patrol patterns that were so useful for automating your fleet to defend your planets.  Unfortunately, because of the turret cap (and the knowledge cap), it's just not feasible to have turrets on every single planet you capture.  The ability to have free-roaming patrols cut down on the micromanagement of having to deal with every single little planet dealing with border aggression.

Is it still possible to create automated planet patrols with the new FRD system, or was that intentionally/unintentionally removed?

Thanks.

Odd, I don't recall when this happened.  But it does sound vaguely familiar.  Does anyone know the version it changed? (an odd question from a programmer, I know)

Anyway, I'm sure we could at least provide a global control for this, and hopefully planet-level or even a new type of redirector that does it the old way.

Two types of FRD would be nice:
1.Cross-Planet FRD (like the old one) that would force your units to destroy all the units on each planet before moving on.
2.Local/Focused FRD (like the current one) that only "activates" once the units reach their destination.

A different color outline for each would also be spiffy.

Right, I remember others asking about it too.  I just don't remember when the change happened :)

I wonder if it's when you brought in the garrisoning levels item for planets.  They're supposed to steal units from the redirectors for permanent garrisons.  I never use it because I don't want to have my fleet stalled out like that, but it's a semi-viable alternative.  Your Missile frigs just never end up garrisoning amongst other issues though.  They always get there late. ;)
