Question about UI
« on: October 25, 2012, 08:48:54 pm »
How do I switch between the Champion UI and the normal UI in a single player multiple champion game? I've tried deselecting the champions, selecting only the Home Command center, selecting and deselecting everything, toggling between Galactic and Planetary views, and changing the planet being viewed. If this is a bug, say so and I'll move this over or re-post this in Tech support, but I feel like I'm just missing something.

In a single-champion game, deselecting the champion works fine for switching out of the champion view.

Welcome to the forums :)

Ctrl+H will switch you between champions, Ctrl+L will switch you back to a normal player, though I'm not sure what it will do if your normal player is normal+champion.

The more "tells you what it will do before you press it" way is to open the STATS window and click on "switch to UI" on your normal player's line.

Let me know if neither of those work :)

What Keith said. Ctrl+H will cycle through all the champs. If you look in the bottom right hand corner (hard to see sometimes), there is a red text message that tells you what UI you are looking at. Normal+Champion doesn't have one so you know it is your main UI.

Ctrl+H will switch you between champions, Ctrl+L will switch you back to a normal player, though I'm not sure what it will do if your normal player is normal+champion.

Ctrl+L goes to the Normal UI for the player in Normal+Champion.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Thanks, that works. I thought I'd looked through all the keyboard commands, but I guess I overlooked some.

It seems like not leaving the Champion UI only happens intermittently. The most common time for this to arise is when I'm going through each of my champions and assigning module configurations to each of them individually (select one champion, enter ship configuration window, apply changes, repeat for another champion, and so on, then select a non-champion item or deselect everything), if you're interested in trying to reproduce this minor inconvenience.

What I've adopted is using Ctrl+H to hit each champ and using Ctrl+M to get the Ship Design window for each. When I've run through all the champs I'll use Ctrl+L to make sure I'm back on my Normal UI for everything else we have to do.

To me it sounds like you haven't cycled all the way back to the Normal+Champion slot (however you were cycling). If you end on that Champ, then switching to the Normal UI happens as you think it should. If you end up on a different player slot, you won't get the Normal UI (each champ being a different player slot).

Easiest way to tell who's UI you are looking at is the red text at the bottom right hand corner. If you have a unit selected, the text will be partially obscured by the "selected unit" box.

Yea, it's a bit strange when you have a normal+champion and a champion-only player that you're trying to control.  Generally if you don't have a champion selected it tries to show the normal UI.  But if you've switched your UI to a champion-only player (which is necessary to open its champion in ship-design and happens automatically when you try) there isn't a normal UI to show.  It could just say "no normal UI" to make it easier to tell what happened, but usually when you're playing champion-only you want to keep seeing your XP/Hull/Shield/Charge resources at the top even if your champion is currently not selected.

It's kinda tricky to figure out how to get it to always do what the player wants.  I could add an interface setting for "always switch back to a normal player if I have no champion selected" but that wouldn't actually help the new-player who doesn't know about that setting ;)

And Cinth suggested moving the "Currently Viewing Another Player's UI" message to a part of the screen that doesn't sometimes get obscured by the selection or planetary summary window, though I'm not sure exactly where I'd put it.

That is part of the reason I asked the way I did. Best place I could think of was the upper left info box. Lots of temporary announcements get posted in that box and the "UI" message is a temporary deal. Keep it nice and red and have it list at the top??
