Have you considered a bugtracker?
« on: October 02, 2010, 04:06:14 am »
With all the oodles of bugs that crop up and many of them being either intended or "fixed" already it can get rather confusing to search the forums for bugs.

I guess you have considered using a dedicated bugtracking system? It should help you keep track of the bugs, and help us report bugs in a more concise manner, and also let us search bugs or even find active bugs and help with testing.

I don't know of too many bugtracking systems, but we use Mantis for Dwarf Fortress, and it seems to work very nicely.

We looked into this heavily almost a year ago, but the generalthoughts were:

1. People didn't want to log in to a new system.
2. Most of the trackers cost money and don't seem worth it.
3. Most of them seem to have too many features, but not the right kinds.

Mainly I haven't seen one yet that made me happy. In past jobs I always codes my own.

I probably should bite the bullet and get mantis installed, though. That was one of the top condenders, if I recall (that forum thread from last year is in here somewhere), and it's becoming clear with 3.7 that we do need something.

Yeah, the "registering for a new system" sure is a showstopper for some people, I do realize that. However, one should keep the bugreporting forum for those people and hopefully some fanatics (like us xD) will transfer the bugs into the the bugreporter.

Just keep a nice, giant stickypost "WE HAVE A BUGREPORTER, GUYS!" in the forum ;)

Just let the forum users know that a bug tracker would be very helpful for you guys, so if you want to contribute please register and submit bugs through that. They can still post to the forum, but they know thats not the preferred method and may not get as much attention.

Taleword use also a bugtracker, the username and passeword is the same as the Board. Users don't need to subscrib two times with a system like that.

True, but that takes a lot more challenge, I think.  I'll see what I can find out, anyway.

I see that some of the bugs are as category "Suggestion - General Idea" -- are we moving suggestions to the bug tracker as well?

I think there would be a few forum members willing to watch the forum bug reports and then properly submit them on Mantis.  Then they could post a link to the bug tracker in the forum thread so others would know it had been properly submitted.
