Crappiest PC still around is a 3500+ Athlon which I don't game with, so... I can't compete :P

Main system is an e6600 at 3.15 GHz (personally I don't need quad, just for gaming), air cooled, stock vcore which never goes above 65°C core (with prime95) even when it's 25°C in the room. So it probably has still some way to go, but I'm too lazy for stability testing :P.

Gigabyte GA965P-DQ6, 4 GB DDR2-800 at 700, 512MB 9600 GT at 700 MHz GPU/1000 MHz RAM (which needs to go away ASAP as it has started to choke badly in recent months... but I can't complain, it was 100 bucks and fine for 18 months), Windows XP 32bit (waiting for retail Win 7.. way too lazy to screw around, and who really cares about unused RAM with current prices :P).

Viewing it on an HP w2207h (22"), btw. I love glossy displays, won't EVER go back to matte.

And yeah, you have to love the e6600/q6600 series for overclocking, although they aren't quite as great as the Celeron 300A was back in the day :P
Also, I've been overclocking for over a decade now (albeit moderately, nothing extreme) and never once had either a CPU or a GPU croak on me.

Had one of those as a back up card when my 800 Ultra burned out. Nice card actually.

Got a 2.4 single core with a Geforce 4 Ti. Not exactly the best specs I know :)
It runs fine so far but I haven't gotten any super large fleets yet.

1. Will the game run a lot smoother when I play Co-op with a friend who hosts on a very fast computer? (So I dont have to process the AI anymore)

2. Also, should I expect any major slow down problems later on?

3. And can I turn down the graphics enough so that these problems go away, even in large battles?

Yes, having your friend hsot for multiplayer is going to be all but a must for larger games. The rig you describe is similar to my second rig, which my wife has been using for playing ai war in co-op with me as the host. In our games, we have had as many as 45,000 or so ships without any lag except perhaps briefly in some very large battles.

For solo play, it depends on how you play. If you try to take every planet in an 80 planet map, and your game lasts 50+ hours, yes you will have major slowdown problems after a point -- that tends to lead to huge numbers of ships in the galaxy, and is really not the wY the game was designed to be played. If you play on a difficulty that is appropriate for you, your campaigns are unlikely to last more than 20-some hours at the most (and mine tend to top out at 13 to 18 hours at most), and you'll likely never hit a significant ongoing issue. Large battles may lag more, but it's probably not going to be a huge issue. I would suggest 40 or 60 planet maps to be on the safe side (in multiplayer, my wife and I were on 80 planet maps).

As far as the question of graphics settings go, you can definitely turn that down if you are having issues with a lot of ships onscreen at once. But usually if that is a problem, then the CPU load is already more of a problem because of the increased load of the simulation, etc.

I've played it on a 4+ (5?) year old Dell Inspiron 6000, it runs fine with medium-sized games.  If you turn off the backgrounds, stars, etc. then it never has a problem.

Old stuff for the win.

i run mine with a 133 hz Atom with 2 g of RAM, unfortunately i cant even play halo on it but i can manage a fleet by the thousands
