I find Teleport Battle Stations pretty useful on defense, and sometimes on attack. On worlds that aren't too reinforced they're pretty good for taking out guard posts quickly. This does require lots of micro.

Etherjets have been quite good fun in the past. There was one world where I'd captured loads of high level lightening turrets (which is no longer possible) and I kept using the Etherjets to drag any raiding ships to the turrets, where they were quickly destroyed.

Snipers I've found to be useful on attack and defense, but only really any good when massed. Not tried them yet with the light starships (great idea there TheWordWillSetYouFree), but 400+ Snipers with 5x attack boost should be absolutely devastating, so long as the AI doesn't get chance to build counter-sniper turrets.

Spacetanks are fantastic if you're up against many Fortresses, they hardly ever die. I probably wouldn't choose these as a starting ship, but they're useful if you pick them up later.

I wouldn't really say that I have a favorite atm, but after some recent changes to FF bearers, they warrant a look-at.  Combine them with the now supply-free MRS, and you have a pretty good solid fleet that won't need many replacements.  With a full grouping of MK 2 ships (fighters/frigates/bombers/FF bearers), an MRS with several tugs, and a full complement of light starships, I've taken 2 MK 3 planets (with MK 1 Ion cannons) losing less than 20 ships total.  Having a MRS in the middle of your fleet repairing your FF Bearers really makes the difference IMO.

My favorite right now is the Anti-Armor ships. They are a bit weak right now but i feel they have "grrreat potential". (extra point to those who got that)

I use a variety of ships depending on the game and availability.

Planes: STEALTH FORCE IS GO. I almost always choose a planet with planes if possible. The ability to build a huge swarm of them in the opening minutes of the game thanks to low resource costs means you've more than likely cleared a handful of planets around you and an ally's home stations. This head start in the beginning, and judicious micromanagement of low power mode can equate to near lossless gate-raiding, or capturing a planet. You can also send them in ahead of a main force to take out wormhole defense without worrying about mines(exposing friendlies to less damage) and reaching key positions on a planet.

Munitions: Reminds me of finding the shot upgrades in the old arcade shooters. more boosters more power. As an individual unit, they are outclassed by a starship's boosting ability, but as a group of even 10 or so, the overlap assures me that every single one of my ships is running on at least one cup of caffiene at all times, like me.

ZBeam frigates: not too great alone, but move em in group-move with the rest of your fleet, and you effectively prevent the enemies from catching a long-enough breather to have an engineer heal it. Beam attacks SEEM to be instantaneous, so there is no chance of firing a volley and having an engie fix something in-between shots. Also, its orange attacks spice up my domination.

Viral shredders: BEST MELEE SHIP. PERIOD. Set these babies loose on FRD. If a shredder or group of shredders isn't doing mega-damage on something, no problem because they'll just make more, and eventually, that ship increase can start to add up. Admittedly, they begin to take a massive drain of energy, but..SCRAP em, and get resources from the AI(since AI provided BP for the ship(s) scrapped).

Parasites: So uh..instead of fighting me..let me make you an offer you CAN'T resist(unless immune to reclamation). Parasites aren't the strongest units, but I assure you, reclaiming engineers that are repairing wormhole defenses, lvl 3 and 4 enemy ships, and wandering patrols as you raid, is something worth mentioning. 5xxx-7xxx ships planning a CPA? Do you know where they're gonna strike? If so, send the Parasites to "Bargain" with your enemy. I don't destroy ADV factories or ADV labs, why destroy enemy ships when I can use them too?

It's funny, I actually haven't gotten to play with these since suggesting 'em (I'm pretty ferocious about taking random seeds/start locations, and never gotten them via an ARS) but it sounds like they're really cool.  I may have to bend my rules and try them.

x4k - I promise that I'll buy yet another copy if you restore sentinel frigates to similar w00tness levels...

Ha, you don't have to buy an extra copy to get me to do stuff.  I was already going to say that we need a "rebalance sentinel frigates" thread in the balance tweaks forum, with ideas for how to change their balance.

A standard MkI & MkII Bomber blob takes Fortresses out faster and with fewer losses.

That'd be the munitions over-boost effect on the starships.  You can clean out a MkIV world with the very same units.  Honestly, since the munitions buff I've not bothered to unlock MkIII or MkIV ships at all; you simply don't need them.  *still mourning the demise of my Munitions Booster pretties*  *sniffle*

Teleport battle stations .........nothing like 100 ships magically appearing exactly where you need them, exactly WHEN you need them.

Thats one reason I really like the Teleport battle stations.  When you get swarmed by 3K autocannons, or eitherjets, and they break past your defenses, its nice to send TBS's to round them up before they wreck any havock.

But then I also like the Z beam frigate. When you dealing with thousands of ships, Z beam's are the way to go.

And then you have Replecators (Viral Shreaders, although I think they should have there name changed to replicators). I recently did an attack with about 5K of these, and about 40 capital ships. The caps targeted other caps and structures, while the shreaders took on everythign else, even stuff they where weak against like armoured. It was supposed tobe a suicide run where I lost a bunch of shreaders (was trying to decrease the flock). But they just kept on making more and more. Even with 3 ion cannons poping them.

I'm loving Shredders :P  They're an unstoppable defence force, something great to leave on FRD mode in enemy sectors too.  They're no substitute for a well balanced fleet make no mistake, but as a vanguard force they cause havoc :D  Favourite tactic atm is to let loose about 150-200 of these on a system, FRD them and then let them soften the whole system up before my main fleet comes through :)

They're great for warp gate raids as well (the tech 3 ones anyways)!

Haha, AI amased 9k units at a worm hole. So I sent threw 8 EMP's for a total of 4mins of paralisis. I then sent threw 2,000 Shreaders and some caps and other things. I now have 8,500 Shreaders.

Just had a great battle in one of my main systems.

I had a zenith trader pass through early in the game so decided to invest in a zenith power plant to fund mass waves of shredders later on in the game.  Obviously this meant that the waves were twice as large so I had to buff the defences up quickly.

Before I knew it, 250 mk 2 parasites were inbound, fighting against my fleet of 100 Shredders and it was back and forth for about 10 minutes :P  Just as I start making progress on the parasites, they'd use the converted Shredders and replicate more so I was fighting against two self replicating/capturing units :P  I won out in the end and came out with 300 shredders or something stupid but it was back and forth for quite a while :P

Ohhh interesting.. What would happen in a balanced shredder vs shredder engagement?
Do they do the same amount of damage as their build points?

Wouldn't 300 shredders vs 300 shredders just end up being an eternal fight with no advantage for either side?  Or would an equal fight generate and infinite number of shredders for both sides? :P

well thats what I'm wondering - If in a 1 on 1 engagement, will they, in theory, kill each other, spawning a single shredder again on each side?

Their numbers would ebb back and forth in a dynamic equilibrium, unless the encounter is unstable and one side can gain an advantage by the random initial conditions of the fight.
