Explain the use of this Ship to me !
« on: August 19, 2013, 07:38:56 am »
So, the idea is that I'm posting ships from my ongoign game where cant i find a use for and you tell how these ships can in general be utlized.
This is with all addons but the last two disabled.

For starters, my bonus ship this game is the RAPTOR.
What are some good situations or tactics to use it ?

- thank you.

Raptor: These guys are very effective against snipers and zenith bombards. With their great speed and cloaking (be sure to toggle standby with (k) if you don't want them to ruin cloak firing), they can hunt down those pesky Bombards and Snipers. Under the right circumstances, you can also take advantage of their ability to kite units they outrange.

They also make an amazing mobile defense force if you grab mkIII and an adv. Factory. That way you can take fairly deep planets without having to rely too heavily on turrets.

One thing to note:  don't even think about using them near Missile Frigates.  They will be eaten alive.  They can kite the other two triangle ships to death, though.
My other bonus ship is a TARDIS.

Yeah i figured out Raptors are actually PRETTY good.

Now, i have another 3 SHIPS.

Armor Ships: I guess to soak up damage, to take them along with your fleet.
Electric Frigate: Kinda versus swarms, so maybe to defend against warp attacks ?

Vampire Claw !  I have no idea. Suggestions ?

Armor ship is nothing unique really, has a decent attack and pretty high health.

Electric Frigate is used vs. swarms, such as an AI wave as it emerges from the Warp Point.

Vampire Claws are very nasty when they can be used. Because they pair Cloaking and Force Field immunity they are great and taking out high value targets underneath force fields. However the fact that they have a melee attack and that it is the Fusion Cutter limit the situations they can be used in. (Several AI structures are immune to Fusion Cutters so double-check the target you want to send the Claws after.)

Vampire Claw is probably in the top 5 of ships I hate to see the AI unlock. (Stupid Missile Immunity.)

Vampire Claws are also cheap enough you can spam them.  eg Build a few Space Docks near a wormhole, select them and ctrl-right click the wormhole, set them all to loop-build Vamps with engie support, and watch as a torrent of hungry, fast, powerful melee ships wreak havoc on the adjoining planet.  Should also work with Mobile Space Docks outside supply.

Electric Frigate Shuttle: To paraphrase the wiki, the magic numbers are forty and two hundred. As long as there are at least forty units, you'll do the same amount of total damage as you would against two hundred, no waste. The wiki has some additonal useful information and analysis on these units, but if I have my math correct:
24 Electric Shuttles Mk1 vs 200 units: 38,880 damage per enemy
24 Electric Shuttles Mk1 vs 40 units: 194,400 damage per enemy
24 Electric Shuttles Mk1 vs 1o units: 194,400 damage per enemy

Note: Range 7,000, Reload Time 20

Neinzul Drones start at 80,000 heath and most have a range of five thousand or less with attrition of thirty seconds.  Electric Shuttles can greatly ease the pressure your blob is facing in a large battle, but their low fire rate is a handicap when you're only facing drowns and spawns who'll often arrive in waves depending on source. Actual youngling fleetships generally have enough health and lower attrition that Electric Shuttles aren't nearly as fantastic, but they're still useful against the numbers you're going to regularly face going up against the various Neinzul AI types and minor factions. Spire Blades on the other hand only last ten seconds and are self damaging so that twenty reload really stinks.

They are also moderately useful against reclamator type enemies such as leech starships and zombie guardians - they'll generally wipe out any low health converts at the same time they take out regular incoming fleet threats, freeing the rest of your blob to focus down the main targets.

Vampire Claw: Useful for taking out some of the more annoying artillery types, they also do quite well against guardians even before you figure in their bonus damage. On the other hand, starships are generally immune to fusion cutters, even artillery types such as the Plasma Siege Frigate. There are a few surprise exceptions such as the Zenith Devestator and Spire Corvette, but not enough to be useful. They're even cheaper than fighters, have nearly the same health per ship (albeit lower cap), and then vampirism extends that further. If I'm not using them elsewhere, I like to stick them directly on top of a wormhole in support of my turrets. Apparently, Dire Gaurdians don't get fusion cutter immunity across the board - I expected otherwise. It used to be everything over a certain level of health got fusion cutter immunity, but they've mixed it up with the guardians.

Unfortunately, many of the larger fleetships also have tractor immunity, like Spire Tractor Platforms, but Vampire Claws are still capable of taking out Tractor and Widow Guardians while ignoring nearby MLRS and Missile Guard Posts that can't touch you. Of course you can't do anything to any of those guard posts either, but they'll usually be accompanied by guardians you can do something about.

P.S. I generally wouldn't hack an ARS for Vampire Claws or Armored ships, but I would gladly take them as a default. I might hack for Vampire Claws if the AI has unlocked some particularly troublesome ship types (bombards >:( )or guardians. I would often hack for Electric Shuttles... but if your game setup often involves defensive AIs I would pass.

Simple tips!

Electric Shuttles: Park them on a frequently-attacked wormhole, they'll do a maximum of damage there. Do keep a transport nearby, though, just in case the next wave is full of something immune to electric attacks, or something that eats Electric Shuttles for breakfast. If that happens, pack the shuttles into the transport and let something else take over.

Raptors: They're fast and cloaked with plenty of range. Means you can use them very well for micro-managed system defence, sending a pack of them wherever you quickly need to take out a few enemy ships, without having to move the main fleet. I advise against letting them FRD, though - they are pretty fragile.

Vampire Claws and Armoureds: Just mix them in with the main fleet (if you use one) and let them do their thing. Unless you need to take out a specific single enemy installation they are strong against, you'll probably have no particular strategic need of them. Let them add to your overall strength and damage soaking capability.
