Capital Ship Discussion
« on: January 08, 2012, 01:16:13 am »
The following post is a bit of a spoiler for the Fallen Spire campaign.  Read on at your own discretion.

After finishing the "Fallen Spire" Campaign-esque Minor Faction, I felt like making this post.  In my opinion, the Spire Capital Ships are quite a lot of fun to play with (Though I think they're slightly overpowered in some respects).  I'm quite certain that this has been suggested on the Mantis BT, but my goal isn't so much to suggest something outright, at least for the time being.

My goal with this thread is to get a feel for what others think on the matter, and if there is interest in the idea, to workshop the idea so that we have something half-decent to present to the development crew once they finish up with AVWW.

For those who haven't played Fallen Spire, think of the Capital Ships as Riot Control starships.  They have various hardpoints on them, and you must select what equipment is mounted to these hardpoints in order to fit the ship to whatever role you wish it to play in your fleet.

In my opinion, if such a set of ships were added, the following would need to be true:
  • It would be a Minor Faction, so those who do not like the capitals can disable them.
  • They would be slightly less powerful than the Spire Capital Ships
  • There would need to be enough of them available for construction to have a handful in each of the player's main fleets (I usually have 3 fleets of mixed units I work with), yet not so many that they do not dilute their value or importance.  Losing a capital ship should have an impact, yet it is hard to have such an impact with too many of that ship type in the field.  I believe 6-10 for the smaller capitals and 1-4 for the larger ones would be appropriate.
  • The AI should get a set of Capital ships, ideally functioning in much the same way Hybrids function in terms of their equipment, level, and supporting fleet.
  • They should take a long time and a significant economic investment to produce.  Equipment would be unlocked via various researched technologies, much in the same way it is in the Fallen Spire campaign.

I am interested in others' opinions, and seeing if we can't make a discussion out of this.
