AI War Updater requires administrator rights. Why? (Win7)
« on: March 05, 2012, 04:38:57 pm »
Just what it says on the tin: In Windows 7, updating requires one to be logged into an administrator account, even if AI War is installed to a folder that does not require admin right to modify. (Mine is installed through Steam to C:/Games/Steam)

This is... frankly, rather annoying. Any way to fix this?

Nope, because that's just the way that bitrock installbuilder is coded -- we're using an installer-program to do the installations, and it assumes it needs admin rights to install anything.  Hence the requirement.

If there was some way to run the file myself I could run it with the "run as administrator" button. Right now there doesn't seem to be any way to do that.

Hmmmm...Where is the temp folder that the game downloads the updater file to? Might be able to do it from there.

Also, wow, 89 seconds. Thats got to be a tech support record.

...I guess this thread should have gone into the tech support forum. Ooops.

The file itself is in the main AI War folder, wherever you have that installed to.  Once the files are downloaded, all you have to do is right-click that updater file and hit Run As Administrator, as you say, and that will be that. :)

Glad I can help!

Yeah, that doesn't work.

Oh well. I guess I'll have to just make everyone administrators again.  :P

Alternatively you can take an already-complete (preferably freshly-done and updated) install (so you'll have to do it as Admin _once_) and then just copy the AIWar directory on to a jumpdrive.  Thanks to the "zero-prerequisities-and-we-mean-it" nature of the unity player it can literally run off of that jumpdrive, though I don't recommend that.  But you can just copy the directory onto the target machines that are obviously not being used for a LAN party at work :)

Ooh, I totally didn't catch that.  But yes, to that sort of problem, the jump drive is by far the ideal solution.  We don't do anything with the registry, so everything is local into that one folder.  Just put a fresh settings.dat/bak in each one, and you're set.

Alright, I'll do that.

Been meaning to put it on my flash drive anyways. I made space and everything  ;)
