I actually love the idea of this randomly showing up as well as the standard 'planet, stars, and nebula' sort of background. The brightness and the lack of variety I think are really all that kill it for me. The image itself is really cool. Then again, I never really thought of AI War being a game so much about the art, and never really looked at it as having the "AI War" look if that makes any sense. You spend most of your time not really seeing any of the art, after all.

Some say AI War doesn't have good graphics.. I think I've even heard they're "pretty bad to be honest".

I really like the art style of AI War.. the ships, buildings, shots/ammo and explosions all look good even though they're simple. The art style is modest and simple and gets the job done.

And "not seeing the art" because of being always zoomed out isn't exactly true. I actually end up zooming close enough to see the art quite often especially if I micro. Hell sometimes I just like to take a couple of seconds to look at that Data Center, Superterminal or Super Fortress because they look cool. I like the art style.

I don't think Chris felt that it was broken, just that it could be better.

We do generally avoid fixing what isn't broken, but if that were our #1 priority then there wouldn't be expansions, so it's not quite that simple :)

Personally I think the image is nice but that this may not be a net-gain over the previous iterations.  Similar to how I feel about the changes to the planets in 6.0 (the new variety was nice, but ultimately the newer planets didn't have as good a quality overall).

But what I personally think isn't really here or there in terms of art choices, which is why I'm trying to figure out what y'all think.
Yes I understand (a lot of things even though it may not always seem like that (I think a lot (sometimes too much) even though it may not seem like that either)). I'm not bashing anyone (not that I'd think you thought I were). Simply harsh criticism.

Tone down the glare and it will be fine.
I don't think so. It still has the low resolution and the art style took a 180 degree turn.

EDIT: I'd say more thoroughly thinking and planning. Sleep a night or 2.. or 7 before making a decision. Analyze. (I'm not saying thinking and planning didn't take place)

Beware, recursive parentheses is the path of the Sad Panda ;)

On the low-res thing, is that your impression even when looking at the image separately and not in-game?  In theory I'm supposed to have it scale down to fit smaller-than-1920*1080 screens (while maintaining aspect ratio) but the scaling method on AIW didn't like that at all so I just had it center the image.  But none of that applies to just looking at your AIW/RuntimeData/Images/MainMenu.png or whatever it is.

By the way, Spiderman Turret description still claims it's identical to the Sniper Turret except for engine damage.

Oh no, it's not as if I'm calling the game ugly. I actually love to zoom in and see, say, little details like the appearance change between each mark of ship. But, the game seems to be rather hard to play when you aren't in far zoom. Far zoom gives you a whole lot of information that you can use to make reasonable decisions, and in regular gameplay that's what I"m doing. Likewise, in 'regular gameplay' I'm probably not going to give that title screen more than a second glance. Why? Because I'm much, much more interested in playing the game. There's just something about the way it's set up. If I want to look at the art, I have to set aside a moment to get in a close enough zoom as to make the art look good. It's almost like I internally flip game mode between 'crush the AI' mode and 'look at pretty stuff' mode. And, well, in doing that, I don't remember whether everything's consistent with the title screen or not.
Besides, some older assets almost look like pixelart you'd see in an SNES style RPG, and other art looks like stuff you'd find in, say, A Valley Without Wind. I'm actually a big fan of the energy collector's art because it looks like somebody built a huge power plant on the world map of FF6. Next to the command station though? It looks a tiny bit out of place. Again, that's not to say that the sprites don't look good... although I really do want to question some of the guard posts and guardians because of how bizarre they look.
I dunno, I just don't care about the gameplay when I'm looking at the art, or about the art when I'm dealing with gameplay. And, the way that the game works, the gameplay is actually really really good, so the title screen doesn't bother me in that way. It's actually really cool, because no matter how the art looks, you'll always be able to play the game equally as efficiently as pro Starcraft players on minimum settings.

Edit: I guess really I'm only comparing the home command station with anything else.

In-game and in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ai war fleet command\RuntimeData\Images\MainMenu.png"
It's not like "pixelated low resolution".. but it is. A bit blurry. I use PhotoFiltre for my image/picture stuff.. when I look at it with 50%  zoom ("further away") the resolution seems fine. But at 100% zoom which is the original resolution and same as in-game.

So I don't think
but the scaling method on AIW didn't like that at all so I just had it center the image
is the problem.

I want to say, that though I do like the variation of previous main menus, i think this picture is really nice.

on a critiquing the image note, i think the low resolution asteroids might be what makes the image look bad to some of people.

All of the background looks sharp and nice, but these foreground out of focus objects with very low texture resolution... not the best.

I think it is due to the large amount of glare, combined witth some parts appearing low res is the problem

Yerg.

Hello Mr. Dire Guardian, I see you brought friends.

Only a couple, but that was enough.

I finally got enough free time to go ahead and checkout the new expansion stuff, so of course I left Dire guardians enabled. I did drop the difficulty to 7.0 figuring that would let me survive the surprises coming my way.

It probably would have if a Dire Guardian Lair had not spawned only 2 hops from my homeworld blocking my empire's expansion path, so I had to take it out. Destroying the lair was rather straightforward, but 3 Dire guardians to the face at just under 1 hour gametime and only 3 systems controlled was not survivable, probably not even if I had known exactly what was coming. (It was an artillery and 2x tractors for reference.)

A couple more planets captured and/or another hour of gametime and it would be quite survivable, if interesting.

I did not even get to try the Showdown plot......

That's coming though.

Glad to see Arcen's continuing the tradition of the sledgehammer introduction to new features.  8)

On the title screen as that is under discussion, I fall into the camp that likes it. I can see people's point about the center being too bright however. I run 1920x1200 and it is close to the line between too bright and acceptable. On lower resolutions where the sun flare around the planet takes up a larger percentage of screen space, I can see how the too bright complaints are justified.

D.

I think dgs are fine in mid game, but.they with frightening regularity appear 2planets out. meaning if i take just one world they start spawning.

Can they appear a minimal 4 worlds out, or at least 3?
Life is short. Have fun.

We don't have to keep the new one but I don't think Chris is going to be happy about "2 or 3 players in the release thread didn't like it" as a reason for "sorry, we can't use that image you just paid that contractor $200 for"  ;)
That would be remarkably close to the sunk cost fallacy.

I agree that new image is to bright.
And maybe not even only the glare - whole of it is brighter than previous one which reduces menu clarity a bit.

As for Core turret controllers... sad panda. They still force you to do with them what they are meant to support (Aka more distributed defense to buff said defense ). Not sure how new re-balance will affect that.. they might be able to defend themselves if you get enough of them - did energy costs remain from mk V?
Is there any plan for actual per planet turrets any time soon?
