AI War Beta 4.047 Released!
« on: December 09, 2010, 12:42:22 pm »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2010/12/ai-war-beta-4047-released.html

This one is another long list of bugfixes and balance changes.  There is still more to be done, but we're making our way steadily through pretty much all the bonus ship types to tighten them up, linearize their stats between mark levels a bit better, and otherwise make them more sensible and better to play with.  This one touches a dozen or more bonus ship types out of the 54 currently in the game, so it's a significant chunk of work just from that angle.

Another big thing in this one, though it's not particularly visible to players, are the enormous number of internal changes that have been made, which cumulatively help to improve RAM and CPU usage, leading to longer times between Garbage Collections.  How significant the benefit will be for you will depend on your specific setup in your campaign, etc.  But it definitely seems to help, and was something that needed doing.  The side effect of this, though, is that we might just have introduced a whole raft of new bugs: we're a month away from the next official release, so it seemed a good time to do that, since, as I noted, it really did need to be done at some point.

We're expecting to do at least one more release today, but if there are any bugs that result from this that are critical, we'll do more than one release to fix those up more quickly; that's why we didn't release this last night.

And of course there's a ton of other general bugfixes, and general balance fixes.  The reclamators were pretty broken in the last release, and now should work much better.

There's still a lot more that we're working on at the moment, though, such as some AI-siege-related code to help with the framerate when the AI is in a big siege against you, and some changes to make superterminals and AI Eyes no longer be "farmable," and yet more changes to help make Maws work better (though there are a number of fixes/changes to Maws in this one, too).  And some changes to carriers are coming.  I wanted to get all that stuff in this release, too, but at some point I had to just put out a new version so folks could get the existing fixes and start testing the new stuff.

Exciting times all around, though, for advanced players in particular at the moment: the game's getting a lot better balanced at the upper end of the spectrum.  More to come soon!

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 4.000 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 4.000 or later, you can download that here.

Excellent!

Already updated, but I had two "Command Error" lines dumped in the message log, but there are no logs of it.

Thanks -- was that with your big giant save?  I'm not seeing that sort of error when loading up that save.

Yeah, it's my current save; it's still happening for me, I have maybe eight lines within 15 minutes.

What changed with AI Eyes? It's not in the notes.

Are spider turrets ever going to be buffed to sniper turret damage like spider turrets say in their description?

Nothing at all yet, sorry that was unclear.  That's stuff we're still working on for the next one.

Yes, when we get to that issue in mantis, as I know it's in there.

Just updated my game via Steam on the Mac.
I have lost all game graphics with exception of the menu interface.
For example, the initial load up screen no longer shows any stars, the titles of all the expansions I own are missing in the top right as well.
If I load up a game, the message log just reports errors, I can see the resource amounts in the upper left ticking, and have audio, but everything else in gone.
One other thing of note, the game no longer has the SoL expansion listed as installed, as it has in the past, prior to this update.

So, basically unplayable....
Is this A Steam issue, a Mac issue, or am I an isolated incident?

Thanks,
Glass

This release trashed the game. When 4.046 ran, everything worked fine, after the automatic update, AI war is very slow. It shows no version an steam id at the left-top of the screen, no star background nor nebula at the opening screen and no expansion packs at the right. Text scroll is very slow. When I disable start and nebula I get the version and steam login id at the top, and expansion packs at the right. Steam popups are *very* slow too. When hosting a new game, I get no galaxy chart, (all black). When the game shows (it never was this slow), I get no game objects (like ships, spacedock etc, everything is black in the middle) but I get a lot of UnhandledErrors in messages. Also the UnhandledErrors.txt contains 2megs worth of:

12/9/2010 8:40:06 PM (4.047)
-----------------------------------
UnhandledErrors-----------------------------------
12/9/2010 8:40:05 PM (4.047)

  at Game.DrawGame () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
  at Game.UpdateDisplay (Boolean IsFullVisualUpdate) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
  at MainCameraLogic.Update () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
Stack Trace:   at Starfield.RenderStarfield (.UnityRenderer R, Int32 Seed, Boolean IsForGameStart) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
  at Game.DrawGame () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
  at Game.UpdateDisplay (Boolean IsFullVisualUpdate) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0
  at MainCameraLogic.Update () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

When I disable the star background and nebula I get the planet and game objects back.

Where can I download 4046 so I can play a game of AI war again??

Thanks in advance.. and please keep up the good work!

It sounds like it's having some sort of error.  Can you look in RuntimeData to see if there are any txt log files in there?  Posting those would help us fix whatever it is you're running into.  Sorry about that!

So it's not just me :-\,

As I've previously posted, but in less detail, I'm experiencing the exact same thing as nl1dnv.

Maybe I should add that AI war runs on a PC on Windows 7, 32 bit and it is a steam-powered-edition.

Just updated and everything went black in the menu (actual menu buttons are still there). Loading a game had the same result and on the galaxy map as well.

There seem to be some errors in UnhandledErrors.txt like
Code: [Select]

Perhaps there's others as well, but there's thousands of lines so I'm not going to be looking around unless it really helps.

edit: I think it's the same thing that's happening to nl1dnv. I imagine the slowdown is due to all the errors occurring.

edit2: Looked through the file and I think those are the only two kinds of errors appearing. A couple of the first one and then the rest is the second one.
