A few suggestions for new "Sound system" in this game
« on: February 27, 2011, 03:48:29 pm »
You know, I'd like a few audio things that would spice up the game. Right now about the only audio is when the AI destroys your Command station. So:

- When you're being overpowered in a defensive battle on a planet you get a short audio comm, disturbed like it was coming inside of a fighter jet.

"We're losing the fight!! Need reinforcements!!"
or "We're being slaughtered out here!!" . Or something of that manner.

- You take out an enemy Command Station
"Yeehaaww!! Bring it baby!! (female voice)"
or " That's what I'm talking about (male voice)"

+ The enemy CS destroyed, enemy abandons Guard post duty
   " Here they come!!"
+ The enemy CS destroyed, enemy stays at Guard post duty
" Stay right there, we're coming for you!"

- Player Home planet under small attack
" Keep it cool, we won't lose here"
- Player home planet under medium attack
  " All cannons load... fire!!"
- Player home planet under heavy attack
" We can't fall now!! All units, engage the enemy!"

- Ally home planet under heavy attack
  - Just a text message " Ally home planet under attack"
  - or comms " We can't let our friends fall"
  -               " Is rescue mission a go?"

------------------------------------------------

I'm sure not everyone would appreciate this, and it would be some work to be done. But in my opinion it would make this game just that little bit more lively, that feeling that you're actually fighting for the survival of the humankind.
Btw, I'm not saying the lines should be precisely that what I just wrote. They could be comical, dramatical, overplayed, cheesy, hell whatever. Even better if it was a mixture of all of them.

Well all of the human ships are actually just robots with dumb AI but no actual human pilots. And also voice actors tend to be out of the price range of most indie studios. Not that more voices wouldn't be fun, but I don't know how possible it would be.

Who did the AI taunts, by the way? Anyone know?

It would be cool if the spire had a few audio clips. . . It could just be something heavily distorted to sound 'alien' so it wouldn't necessarily require any brilliant acting to sound right, just like the existing AI taunts (no offense to whoever did them).

I also always imagine the neinzul flying around sounding like people on helium or Chipmunks, although this may be less well received if actually implemented in game. . .

I don't like the idea of the human ships or the humans talking. Apart from what BoB said, I am the humans and their 'character' is me, so I don't want them suddenly talking in someone else's voice!

But you don't associate yourself with ALL the fighter jets and bombers out there do you? I mean, you're not a 1000 different people IRL either. Then again, if it's true they're just flying bots then bah. That's just lame.

Change it, now! :D

Btw, why are there cryo chambers then? It says on their description that the planet is overcrowded and there's no room for them to be revived or something? Or do I just remember wrong.
If the planet is overcrowded surely there are people flying the jets then.

"Frakking toasters" is the taunt most thrown at my screen. And not so forum-friendly variations of that...

I don't know if you've noticed, but the majority of the planets are cracked balls of ash. I don't think the game goes into very specific detail, but I've always been under the impression that the planets aren't currently habitable at all, and that the last living humans were in the home command station (or the orbiting human cities). The cryo-chambers are there because you can only fit so many people in any kind of space habitation. They tend to have very hard caps on how many people they could support.

Edit: Cryo-chamber description for reference: "Due to overcrowding in the last human cities, a good portion of the remaining human population has to remain in cryogenic sleep.  After the war is over they can be brought back to life, but for the meantime they contribute to the war effort through the excess solar energy produced as a byproduct of their freeze chambers."

I would prefer the devs focus their efforts on polishing up the game and less efforts on some annoying sound effects that I will invariably wind up turning off due to the small variation. As a "grand strategic commander", I certainly wouldn't want to listen to all he random radio chatter going on throughout the galaxy - that's what interns and "special purpose" AIs are for.

Yeah, your ships are AI bots, you just control them, much like the "battlefield interface" in other RTS's like Supreme Commander.

The Cryo chambers are whatever is left of humanity, basically just being protected and frozen until the galaxy is safe enough for them to be woken back up and work on rebuilding everything again. Of course, knowing human nature, I'm sure another game of AI War will happen soon enough :P

I'd rather have recognisable sounds; or tiny popups, or a dedicated "situation overview" bar or somesuch reporting the latest and most critical news.

Voices, however, tend to get very boring, very quickly.

Yeah voice notifications have to be really well done to be enjoyable. And you need like 30 different responses to keep them fresh. Otherwise it gets old very very fast. Anyone who's played an RTS with units that only have one reply knows how annoying that is.

i dont want my toaster saying, i cant make your toast anymore *HISSY FIT*
AI War - even the smallest units can make all the difference no matter how weak they are still quite capable of taking the hits. if it can Kill and receive damage then it worth its time other wise if it cant kill and cant take the damage for the higher surviving ships then it is worthless.

Starcraft had a TON of responses, they just never said them unless you clicked on the same unit a bunch of times, which is kind of against the point.
