You should try it, there is a serious difference from what I hear. Again, I havent played SC3, maybe Ill download it and give it a shot. As far as I know the storyline is all Non Canon as far as fans go and wotnot. Toys for Bob said if they ever made another game it would be a sequel to SCII not SCIII.

SC3 wasn't really that bad a game in and of itself, but IIRC it didn't follow up on the story line hinted at the end of SC2, and the made some odd game design decisions.  Such as (IIRC) replacing the planetary resource gathering with some sort of colony-builder stuff, and replacing the cartoony 2D animations with IMHO rather ugly puppetlike 3D animations.

I guess I'm in the minority of people that never played SC2 but really enjoyed SC3. Something about SC3 really clicked with me. Maybe it was the only-half-serious politics storylines between the races, or the planet/fleet development, or the mystery solving, but I really got into it and have played through it several times.

SC1 was one of my all time favorite early DOS games, but I did not have the hardware to play SC2 when it came out, so I never got around to playing it.

Like EH said, if you liked SC1 and SC3, you definitely should play SC2 (or UQM).

<---Points to avatar.

I haven't played Ur-Quan Masters for a bit, but I did a couple of years ago and of course owned and played the original SC2 for years back when I had a 486. SC1 & 2 were fantastic but SC3 was only marginal.

I have no idea what you're talking about.  There were only two games.  It's a shame they still haven't made a third...

I use this as my avatar on another site (which is a good way to tell who the other old people are, based on whether they recognize it or not):

I used to replay StarCon2 every couple years, but I haven't for a while for some reason.  I spent a ridiculous amount of time with it with my friends when it was new, though.  Tons of SuperMelee against each other, naturally, and we filled many, many pages of a notebook mapping out the entire galaxy with every system and every planet and what was on each one.  As much fun as doing that was at the time, I sure don't miss making and maintaining my own paper maps when I go back and play games like that or other old RPGs and am reminded of it.

I'll add myself as another SC2/UQM fan. Played both the original (I think I have the game box and the starmap still stashed somewhere) and the free version Ur-Quan Masters quite a bit.

Btw, why has no one commented on the music of the game? That was amazing for a game released in 1992 and still sounds quite fun. There's even updated remixes made at The Precursors, partly by the original authors even.

Good point.  I probably would've, but I already did recently on one of the AVWW threads.  Aside from being completely awesome, the music did a really good job of setting the mood and tone for each different race and was a lot of what differentiated them so well.  Using just that, some simple, low-res background images, wacky fonts, and clever writing, they made them all feel unique and very different from each other, much more so than most games today that have ridiculously detailed character models and full voice acting and all that.

I want to say Machinae Supremacy covered it in their SIDology series, but I might be thinking of Overlord (Which I know they did do).
