(solved) Multiplayer Fails to Work Since Ancient Shadows
« on: October 01, 2012, 11:19:06 pm »
Hi! I know I haven't been here in like, 6 months or something. Anyhow, I've got an issue with AI War recently. I went to set up a multiplayer game, and it's refusing to work at all. I have not changed any of my port forwarding or firewall settings since the last time I played (Before Ancient Shadows), the port in game is still the same, and nothing on my computer has changed (In theory) since then either. Literally the only real change is Ancient Shadows and a butt load of patches. We even tried disabling Ancient Shadows and double checking we had the same version and still no dice. Are there any outstanding bugs as far as that goes or do I have to investigate further?

For diagnosis purposes, can you try creating separate installs of just 5.0, with no expansions, on both machines, and seeing if it works then?

If it doesn't work, that indicates something more fundamental than a change on our side, probably.

If it does work, my next question is: where exactly in the process of setting up the multiplayer game does the current version fail?  Is it just not connecting at all?

And welcome back :)

Can definitely try that this weekend and see what works and what doesn't. Was going to start probing my network too and make sure something weird didn't just happen out of nowhere.

Never connects. Just like if the port weren't forwarded or something, just searches forever and times out. I tried connecting to theirs and they to mine and it failed both ways.

And welcome back :)

Why thank you!

Yea, I have no idea what would have changed since 5.0 to cause that, unless it was something like the executable not being recognized as the same thing by the firewall and thus no longer having those port-forwarding rules applied to it, etc.

My port forwarding is on the router and UDP port based, so I don't imagine that would be causing it, and the windows Firewall is still pointed at the same exe. Though you did just make me think, I've got AI War installed through Steam and Ancient Shadows installed separately, so maybe that could be true.

None of the expansions modify the .exe (actually, the vast majority of our patches don't modify the .exe, it's mostly just the generic unity player; our code is in a .dll), so I don't think the router or software firewall would notice.

That's the only other thing I could think of other than a software bug, but like I said, I'll have to experiment with that.

Solved the problem after far too long trying to figure it out. Evidently, before when we played last, we were using a different port than is the default, and I've reformatted my PC since then, and thus, when I reinstalled AI War it went back to the default port, so we had a mismatch there. That took WAY too long to figure out...

Glad to know you've got it working now, in any event :)
