I just bought the game on steam, and after first time setup and installation of the .NET framework, the game begins to launch, and the profile creation dialogue opens and immediately this error pops up. help would be appreciated.

Something wrong with .NET 3.5.

You rebooted system after .NET installation? I don't know that it is necessary but it is worth trying.

If it still will not work reinstall .NET manually.
http://www.arcengames.com/dl/dotNetFx35setup.exe

I hope that will help.

Hi, Slothsberry. I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you're having with getting the game running. As AcidWeb pointed out, previous instances of this error have pointed to a lack of Microsoft .NET 3.5. Perhaps a reboot is necessary, or you could try downloading and installing it again, yourself. More information is available in this thread: http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,26.0.html.

I'm not sure if the version linked to by AcidWeb is .NET 3.5 or 3.5 SP1, but the latter would be better to avoid desyncs in multiplayer (as explained in the thread above). Following the Option A instructions in that thread might be your best bet.

Please let us know if this doesn't work! Thanks, and sorry again for the problems you're experiencing.

Hello, I have almost exactly the same error except I don't even get to the profile creation page.  This error pops up as soon as I try to start the game.  I downloaded the demo from a mirror provided on the AI War site.  (AIWarSetup2000)   I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the .NET 3.5 SP.1 several times with restarts, along with reinstalling the demo several times and there is no change.  I have tried downloading the "AIWar1000To1301" update but when i try to run it I get the same error.  Anything else I should be trying here?
I am running Vista 64.

Any help would be very much appreciated.  (I would likely buy the game)

Here is the error just so you can see:

Hi Mad_Hatter,

The error would seem to indicate a missing or corrupt install of the SlimDX environment, I recommend downloading and installing SlimDX separately to see if that fixes the issue. Link here - http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,1811.0.html

Regards,
Revenantus.

Hey thanks for the quick response, btut I tried installing that from there and it gets right to the end and then gives me this error:

"There is a problem with this windows installer package.  A Program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

I tried downloading it a couple of times, didn't help.  Anything you can help me with?
thanks.

after i did a manual install of .NET, when i start up AI wars, steam think that it's a first-time setup. steam then proceeds to show me a dialog box telling me this, and that it is installing .NET, for about 5 minutes before the game actually launches.

I remember seeing the workaround of running the game outside of steam by downloading the game again from your site, and using the registration key from the steam download, but i'm curious about the fix for this, or if anyone else is having the same problem.

Whoops, there's already a post on this.
