Screen resolution
« on: January 01, 2010, 03:36:30 pm »
I freshly buy the game, go into the menus and I am instantly changed to a 640 X 400 screen resolution, making the menu navigation impossible, I say well I can change it back, So I revert it and head straight into settings to find and disable what may be causing this. But I cannot navigate it at full screen resolution (I've checked the .exe file isnt set to run in 640 X 400) I've also tried a tutorial but it appears I couldn't select anything correctly since the game had incorrectly decided the position of my mouse (I can have my cursor over a unit but it wont select it unless I'm using the 640 X 400 screen resolution cursor posistion but even if I do I can't see my resources or task bar. (annoying) Help me?

Hi Vulkanis,

This is a completely new one to me. Can you please try reinstalling the game and its Prerequisites to see if that fixes the issue?

I also recommend making sure that your graphics drivers are up to date.

If this fails, can you please post the output provided by running dxdiag from the start menu, and tell us which version of Windows you're running? Thanks.

.net was up to date and installed correctly, I'm on a vista ultimate 32 bit
Direct x is up to date and installed correctly, I have an AMD Athlon X2 dual core QL-65 2.10 GHz
2.00 GBz of RAM and an ATI Radeon graphics card all of them up to date.

Hmm, this is new to me, too. Are you using something that is forcing fullscreen on the application somehow? The game normally fills the entire screen, but is not a "true" fullscreen app. By default it runs at the resolution of your desktop. Perhaps there is some other software running that is chopping up your desktop somehow and making .net believe that is the size of the screen? I would try clearing your settings.dat file and see if that doesn't resolve it. 640x480 is below the minimux requirements of the game, so there is no way it should default into that..

This is on the steam version, and I'm not sure what may be causing it.

Right now I don't have a very clear picture of what is really going on.  Is this showing fullscreen, but in a small resolution?  Is the window just showing tiny, only covering part of the screen?  What value is it set to in the Window Settings section of the Settings screen?  Did renaming or removing your settings.dat file get you back to any sort of default mode, if this was something you changed and cannot now fix?

I deleted the settings.dat and it remained the same, to paint a more vivid picture,
When I start the .exe file. It will immedietely (zoom in alot basically) change my resolution to ALAP (as low as possible) and then if I change it the menus still can't be navigated because it will only show like 1/5 more of the window I couldn't see before.

Can you take a screenshot of your entire desktop?  The description you are noting could mean too many different things, unfortunately.  I suspect that this is some sort of outside interference no matter what the case, though, so I'd look to drivers or various graphical/desktop utilities that might auto-size windows, that sort of thing.  Maybe something that automatically sizes windows to certain parts of your desktop?  That would normally only work on non-fullscreen applications, and so might not affect other games you play (Spider Solitaire and Minesweeper aside, I suppose, if you play those) -- but since AI War is not a true fullscreen app, it would be affected that way.

I just run steam and AI war whenever I launch it, nothing could be autosizing it. Unless its Vista

Without more information, there's nothing I can do.  No-one else has ever reported the issue, and I can't duplicate it or think of a way to duplicate it. A full-desktop screenshot would be helpful in making sure that I am at least fully understanding what is going on.  I wish I could be more helpful, but I really don't have a lot to go on at this point... sorry for the trouble you are having, at any rate!

This is a ATI Driver bug involving steam or a monitor driver / resolution list bug.. but it is a very rare ATI Driver bug under Vista (given that google produces.. very useless results for your problem..) but i have heard of similar thing happening to some people

I would advise you to radically uninstall all drivers of your graphics card/ati related/Monitor/screen , run driver cleaner over it and reinstall them from scratch. Also manually install direct x 9 (yes, as in 9) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

Besides that, what mainboard chipset do you have? Have you installed the latest drivers for it?

The thing is, there is no way AI War can change your screen resolution it doesn't even claim focus, its a fake fullscreen , at heart AI War is a window that fills your screen, it is not a fullscreen like thing (ie, like starting Half-Life 2 ;p)

But before you do this all, download AI war from the arcengames website and install it, use your serial from steam to reg it and see if it still happens....

But that said my bet is on driver problem

Edit: Just to be clear, i am guessing here ;p

Edit 2: And to explain what i read the problem as

1) Start a game
2) Screen Resolution switches to 640x480 but GAME RESOLUTION is still the same as desktop (1280x1024 (for example))

Now you only see the top left corner of the screen meaning you only see 640x480 on your screen of that 1280x1024 game window - Exiting reverts everything back to normal

Thanks so much for that, eRe4s3r!  That's great information to have, hopefully it will resolve the issue there.
