[Solved] Problem - No updater - Need help

I'm having a problem with updating the game. When I hit the "check for updates" button, I get a "updater error" reading "Updater failed to launch." I have the game through steam.

How do I fix this? Do I have to download and apply patches manually, or does steam do this automatically? I haven't noticed any changes to the game since I bought it, and the note in the main menu reads version 2.0

No worries, there are no official updates yet released since 2.0; there are a ton of updates queued up to release as 2.003 this coming Friday (the 8th), and those will be available through Steam in the normal Steam manner (no updater needed) starting soon after that.  If you want the beta prereleases, currently those are available only through these forums via direct download.  The broken updater link on Steam was an oversight, but we're going to be reworking the updater process soon via that button for things like the beta prereleases.

Hey there

I asked the same question once because of all the talk about 2.0001 or whatever in the forums. Back then, the answer was that the Steam version is the official version. The newer version is still an unofficial beta for testing it. To get it, ... I don't know, I dont want it right now^^
Also, if there will be an official updated version, then it will also be updated through steam.

Right now, there isn't an update for each and every little beta change on steam because steam charges Arcane Games each time they bring an update, so it would be stupid to pay for each update right now. I heard there had been a lot of them, they're balancing it all out right now.

Yep, everything is correct, except that Steam doesn't charge us for updating the game through Steam.  We don't update beta versions on Steam, Impulse, or anywhere else simply because we don't want to introduce potential beta instabilities for players who just want the latest as-bug-free-as-possible version.
