[BUG]Gamebreaker: Game does not respond to mouseclicks
« on: October 31, 2010, 11:13:00 pm »
Hey, just bough and downloaded AI War and the expansion on Steam.  When I start the game up, it tells me to select "import profile" if I am an old player, or "Begin Fresh" if I'm new.  Clicking on either of these buttons does nothing.  Hitting enter causes the game to crash and the importer application to launch.

I cannot play this game at all.  Cannot even get to the main menu.

UPDATE

Hitting escape when asked about importing or starting fresh will advance to the next menu, where it tells me to select my player name and colour.  Here I can click the colour box to select a colour, as well as enter a name, but clicking "Save" has no effect.  Neither do the Enter or Esc keys.  Only way to close the program is to end the process.

Also, I've noticed that in the top left corner, faint grey text tells me that I'm using version 4.04Trial, only easy AIs are allowed, a 3hour time limit is imposed, and that Steamworks is active.  I've not been asked for either CD Key yet, seems to think that my copy is not legitimate or something.  I purchased this today on Steam and am running it through the steam client.

Steam will not provide refunds.  Does the developer?

Is there a .ini where I can just set all values to default, specify username/colour and trick the game into thinking that its not the first time I'm running the program?  If so, can someone post the contents of theirs and I will just c/p and replace the username.

If anything isn't clear from my description, I can easily fraps and youtube whats going on.

Sorry to hear about the troubles, I've honestly never heard of this one before.

I can give you a settings file with some default profile info, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't really get anywhere if the game isn't being told about most of your mouse clicks.

Also, when you say hitting enter made the game crash and the importer start, did it actually indicate any kind of crash?  Enter = Run the importer on that screen, Escape = Start Fresh.  When you run the importer it closes the game; it would have to restart the game after the import anyway.

Anyway, I'm really not sure what to say about the main problem with the mouse not working, it sounds like the actual click events are simply never making it to the app.  What kind of mouse do you have?

Very odd indeed, I've never heard of this either.  I take it your using the main Steam version?  You might try getting Steam to verify your local file cache -- this one is so odd (and unseen by anyone else) that it makes me think perhaps you have simply a bad download from Steam.

We do give refunds in the rare cases where that's ultimately where someone wants to go, but only when they buy directly from us -- we can't give refunds for something bought through Steam or another outlet, as then not only do we take a huge loss on the part of the funds that go to Steam, but we also have no way of verifying who has actually bought the game through Steam, etc.

That said, we generally are able to solve the problems for folks when they come up.  I think we've only needed to issue maybe 10 refunds in the last year and a half, with coming up on 40,000 purchases.  In your specific case, it really does sound like something simply didn't download right.

Well right now I'm using an old PS/2 piece of crap I found in the attic until my new mouse arrives.  It has worked for everything else so far.  It did give a standard windows application crash dialog when I hit enter.  What I find odd is that after hitting escape, the game does register my mouseclicks, since I can choose the profile colour that way.

I did finally get it working.  Uninstalling/reinstalling did nothing, so I uninstalled, flushed Steam's cache, flushed system cache, restarted computer, reinstalled.  I'm putting my money on some kind of data transfer error, and then Steam being too lazy to properly delete old data and begin a completely fresh download.

Okay -- whew, glad that did it for you.  Any normal sort of mouse would work, we were mainly wondering if you were using some sort of super-unusual trackball or something.  Download issues like that with Steam are pretty rare in our experience, but you did the right thing for clearing that out, glad that got it working!

Sounds like maybe something was messing up the "which mouse button was clicked" logic; I think the color dropdown responds to any click, but most of our gui stuff looks specifically for left, right, or middle.
