Wiki update questions
« on: January 13, 2011, 12:11:23 pm »
Because I enjoy impossibly huge tasks, I'm trying to help out with keeping the wiki up to date. I've got a few (million) questions though. I've updated the base game features page to include ship descriptions taken from the in game descriptions, but there's a few things that I can't find in my spreadsheet dump. It may be that they just don't exist any more, or it may be that I can't figure out what crazy abbreviation they're listed under.

So what are "Force Field Bearers" and "Tachyon Beam Emitters" and "Dreadnoughts"? Also is it safe to just go ahead and remove the entry for Space Tugs? Are there people out there who still play on pre-4.0 versions? There are several other pages with pre-4.0 data as well. If and when those get cleaned up, should that data be kept for any reason or is it safe to nuke it from orbit?

Also the info on command stations on the base game page indicates there are only basic comm stations and warp jammer comm stations, but no mention is made of econ/mil/log types. Is it safe to assume the variety of comm stations is part of the base game now, and not something that you specifically need an expansion for? If so I'll update that as well.

Shameless bump. Anyone know the answers to these questions? I have many more, but I don't want to flood the forum. I'd really like to be able to help make the wiki a source of any and all knowledge about this game, but I'm stuck in a catch-22 here. If the info's not on the wiki, I don't have anywhere else to go to find the info but to ask on the forums!

It's an echo chamber in here. I finally found Force Field Bearers, listed as "Shield-B" in the ship dump. Of course, why didn't I search for that the first time.  :P Also found the Tachyon Emitters. Found Dreadnoughts by looking through old patch notes and realizing that was the old name for Siege Starships. I also removed an obsolete reference to Tugs from the ship list. Since I'm not getting any feedback on this, I guess I'll wait a few days to see if someone slaps my hand, and then go through and prune other obsolete things from various pages. Although sometimes I do like historical lists of removed things for games, so maybe that's a new page to create.

It seems pointless to ask, since I am increasingly getting the feeling that this thread is invisible to people who are not me, but does anyone want to submit some suggestions for updating the Technologies page with some suggested unlock paths? It's here: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_Technologies if you'd like to take a look. Most of them still refer to unlocking Mark I starships or turrets and will only serve to confuse new players at this point.

Thank you!  Sorry I didn't see this sooner, the forums sometimes don't notify of new threads.  It can be particularly annoying when that's in the tech support subsection.

So what are "Force Field Bearers" and "Tachyon Beam Emitters" and "Dreadnoughts"? Also is it safe to just go ahead and remove the entry for Space Tugs? Force Field Bearers are what are now called Shield Bearers (as they were way in the past, too.

Tachyon Beam Emitters are still called that -- you can find them in the SUP category.  Or turret, I think I moved them.

Dreadnoughts are what Siege Starships used to be called.

Yes, definitely safe to remove all references to space tugs.  I'm sure that some folks play on older versions, but we're keeping the wiki up to date for 4.0 primarily.  I think it's safe to nuke that stuff from orbit, most of the people playing pre-4.0 would be reasonably expert on the game, anyway, and able to use the in-game tooltips, etc.

Yes, that's part of the base game.  The old basic command stations are the new econ.  No expansions required for anything in this post so far.  Thanks!

It looks like it stopped notifying me (us?) of this whole subforum for the last little while.  Sigh...

I keep being tempted to upgrade to the SMF 2.0 forums, but they are still on a release candidate, albeit a really late one.  Maybe sometime after this current release cycle dies down.  The issue isn't the mail server, as that got changed since we moved to our new hosting, etc.  And mantis never drops messages.  So it's something specifically in the forum software, and my fantasy is that they've resolved that in the new builds.  I just don't want to upgrade into whatever other unknown stability issues are in that one.

Thanks! I was only starting to feel slightly ignored, but I was making the mental excuse that you were busy with the 5.0 release and obviously didn't have time for these menial questions. I did notice that you both seemed to have all but disappeared from this forum though. Good to know that it was just a technical issue and not something intentional!

Yeah, sometimes we just run out of time, but it's rare that we ignore a whole subforum.  Thanks for bringing it up!
